Wisdom Beyond Her Years (The Wisdom Series Book 1) (English Edition) Kindle版

4.2 5つ星のうち4.2 20個の評価

Have you ever dreamed of living your life over again?

Would you make different choices this time around? Would you use the wisdom of hind-sight to make sure you didn’t make the same mistakes? Would you have more confidence, take more chances, love more, and live more? Would you die without regret?

When 67 year old Ariel Connolly participates in an experimental attempt to capture the brain functions and memories of 20 ordinary Australians in 2017, she honestly thinks nothing will come of it. She can hardly believe, in fact, that anyone would give good money to fund such research.

Three days after the scan, Ariel dies. As she passed, she thought that would be the end of the story.

So when Ariel wakes up 192 years later, in a new 19 year old body, in a post-apocalyptic underground city, her scepticism about the experiment isn’t the only thing she is forced to re-evaluate. She finds herself excited and confronted in equal measure, with hormones raging and a body that looks like it could do anything.

When she meets the charismatic and dangerous Carla, one of the most powerful women in New Sydney, Ariel learns just how much her new body is capable of.

But Ariel’s new body can’t change who she is and who she has always been. Through love, rebellion and betrayal, Ariel learns one timeless lesson – no matter how many times you get resurrected, you can’t escape from yourself.
Ariel has wisdom beyond her years, but all the wisdom in the world may not be enough to save her.

Please note: this book contains adult themes, occasional coarse language, and lesbian sex scenes

著者について

J-L Heylen lives in the beautiful Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, with her wife, two mad dogs and a disobedient cat. Equity, diversity, community and social justice are all important to her and she brings those beliefs into her work. Speculative fiction for J-L is a way to view the world through a different lens, to see things otherwise obscured by day to day life.

Our heroine, before her death, gets her brain scanned, then some apocalyptic event happens, and she wakes up 200 years later in an isolated community that has "revived" her (read: loaded her scan into a clone).

Values have changed, and the heroine tries to adapt, or maybe change the community she now lives in. I like future societies that are notably different from ours, and although there's some dystopian elements, this one felt well-balanced, with some good things, and some bad things. And the heroine was rational about it, neither some crusader nor somebody just accepting everything randomly.

The first part, where we explore her new life through her eyes, was very good. Unfortunately, with multiple time-skips, the novel then switches to a more "report-esque" tone, less immediate through the heroine, and that's when it stopped working so well for me. I became less involved and interested in the plot. This changes again at the end, but the end has different issues.

Plus, there are several aspect I didn't find entirely convincing: first of, the romance. Although at some points the characters have quite a bit to say about it, it felt largely generic and random. There's some rather boring "fated true love" aspect to it it didn't need, and otherwise not much depth.
Secondly, there's later on some mythical elements, with people foreseeing the future, talking about damaged souls and yaddayadda. It's a classic "weird wise monks/priestesses" trope and I frankly felt it was completely out of place in the plot. Some small elements might have added nicely to the mix, but this was too sledgehammer a approach for my tastes. Characters don't even bother debating it: some random woman comes and tells them that bad stuff will happen and they are totally believing it immediately. Right.
Thirdly, the entire end sequence was a mixed bag for me. There's a lot of tension and interesting stuff happening, but also I feel many moments where I wasn't entirely convinced that they made sense. Obviously, as a reader I don't know all the rules of that particular society. And I try not to be some type of inquisition looking for every small potential inconsistency, just to sabotage my own reading fun. But nonetheless I felt that at the end the laws applied and decisions made were too far from consistent and convincing.

Although I still liked the novel, I found that overall it wasn't what I hoped for and left me somewhat disappointed. There was potential for something better here.

I really enjoyed this book. J-L wove a wonderful picture of the future world and in doing so also made us think about the class system and how a future world should look.

I often have trouble finding a novel that understands the need for a healthy balance between character relationships/love and action/story, so imagine my delight when I stumbled across the Wisdom series by J-L Heylen.

The novels are written in such a way that they seem to flow seamlessly into one another, the characters come to life off of the pages along with the world in which they live. It's the first novel where I have been able to fully imagine, down to small details, the environment and the characters themselves yet I have no doubt in my mind that what I am "seeing" is different to how each reader will "see it" which I believe shows a beautiful ability/skill of the writer as this enables the reader to feel more engaged in and a part of what they're reading.

The setting itself was very intriguing to me and having lived in Australia and seen Sydney for myself it helped a lot with the visualisation and geographical aspects of the plot yet in no way has it been made essential to have knowledge of this, if anything it has been written in a way that it could be anywhere in the world and it is in no way far-fetched or unbelievable.

I found myself having a soft spot for each of the characters, including the "villains" for lack of a better word (whether this was the writers intention or my own inner evil peeking out I am not sure). I found all characters were relatable in some form and the relationships between them, the dialogue and interactions were wonderfully written.

If you are looking for something a bit different with a great balance between romance and action/story, that makes you think about the world, its current state and its future, something that is a bit steam punk or something a bit sci-fi even I would strongly recommend picking up this series. I look forward to the next instalment and to be reunited with the lovely ladies that grace the pages.

I enjoyed this first novel by J-L Heylen very much. The writing kept me entrained because the narrative was well drawn, the functioning of "New Sydney" comprehensively imagined and I empathised with the characters. I enjoyed coming home to immerse myself in it every evening. I'm looking forward to reading "Bride of the City" next!

A dystopian, lesbian novel with Marxist undertones set 200 years in the future? Hell yeah.

I could not put this book down. I was initially reluctant to pick it up, because I'm not usually a reader of speculative fiction, and the title didn't exactly grab me. I realized quickly, however, that the title is perfect for the plot, and that I had arrived in a future world so perfectly conceived and conveyed that I didn't want to leave.

I immediately `got' this brave new world: its politics and class structure, its aspirations and hidden secrets. For a non-SF reader, this is a major tribute to the author.

Author J-L Heylen says in her acknowledgements that this world has been in her head since she was 15, and it shows. Not a detail is left out, not a social custom is left unexplained. And while the book was a little too `explainy' for my personal taste, I think we can put that down to this novel being the author's first. I look forward to watching her writing style evolve over the next two books in the Wisdom trilogy.

Ariel is Wisdom's hero, waking up 200 years in the future into a world of rigid class structure, efficiency and personality downloads. For those in the elite class, like Ariel, it's a good life. The story centres around Ariel's relationship with Carla, the city's Security Commander. Ariel's anachronistic and idealistic ways nearly bring the whole thing crashing down, but as with all classic lesbian love stories, it's a case of the underdog charming her black-hearted companion into a more compassionate way of seeing the world.

Wisdom Beyond her Years is not high literature, but it is a whole lot of fun. Its politics will stir something in every left-leaning reader, and it will no doubt stir something deeper in readers who like their lesbian sex scenes tinged with a splash of kink. I eagerly await this trilogy's next installment.
