The Great Bravura: A Novel (English Edition) Kindle版

4.8 5つ星のうち4.8 9個の評価

Since adolescence, Bravura and salt of the earth Susie have been partners in magic and best friends, as well as occasional bedmates. But when the two performers hire the mysterious and alluring Lena as a third banana to jazz up the act, Bravura falls madly in love. Lena believes in magic—and not just the rabbit-out-of-a hat kind. She encourages Bravura to believe in her own supernatural powers, and when Susie balks, conflict ensues. Things really go south during the classic “Disappearing Box” act, when Susie disappears for real. With her pal presumed dead, and Bravura the prime suspect, the magician must act quickly to find Susie—hopefully alive! To prove her innocence, Bravura must uncover the holes in her own story—even if it means incriminating herself, and her precious Lena, in the process.

“Jill Dearman is the New Queen of Noir.”
Go Magazine

“Brutal and magical and sexy as hell. Dearman’s noir voice shatters boundaries I never knew existed.”
―Augusten Burroughs, author,
Running With Scissors.

“A rich, noirish picture of Olde New York with a punk sensibility that rocks the senses. Dearman’s characters are twisted, doomed, with a lust for life.”
―Roberta Bayley, photographer and author of
Patti Smith and Blank Generation Revisited: The Early Days of Punk Rock.

“Sapphically ardent, meta-absurd, and Nin-sexy all at once, Jill Dearman’s tale is a triumph of mysterious pleasures: a Colette martini with a drop of Robbe-Grillet vermouth and a Jeanette Winterson olive.”
―Michael Atkinson, author of
Exile Cinema and Hemingway Deadlights.

“The Great Bravura straddles two worlds: her feet are firmly planted on earth, among a gritty ragtag group of early-20th century circus performers, while her hands reach for the stars, drawing the reader into a magical mystery realm where fantasy and sorcery are commonplace. Dearman builds on the tension created by the two milieus bumping into each other on the page to ultimately create a morality tale reminiscent of another era―the tragedies of ancient Greece.”
―Aaron Krach, artist, journalist, and author of
Half-Life

"With the illusion of a good magic show and the captivating edge of the early 20th century,
The Great Bravura spellbinds readers in its twisted tale.”
―RT Reviews

I'm always looking for something a little different, whether it being books, movies or music, so The Great Bravura absolutely fit the bill. I honestly can't say I've ever read anything quite like this before: a lesbian film-noir magical romance set in the rough and tumble NYC of the 1940s. There's a struggling heroin, her reliable partner, her cad of a father, a threatening goon and the femme fatal of all femme fatals. All these elements combine in a delicious stew flavored with the tough-guy (gal?) voice of Dearman's protagonist.

The center of the novel is The Great Bravura, a down on her luck magician trying to make it in the big city. Bravura is a complex, fascinating character full of contradictions and doubt. This is important, because even with all the noir posturing the novel engages in, as well as the mystical elements, Bravura is always there to ground the reader and make the story mean something.

A terrific debut and a perfect novel for someone looking for something a little different.

Break out the champagne -- alert the media -- a wonderful new troublemaker has arrived! Every artist who's ever made a difference -- every single one -- is a born troublemaker. Right now this country is dying for lack of enough of them; when a new one starts to emerge you see the guns come out, and hear the dogs begin to bark. SO -- all praise for Jill Dearman! She has the gift; she's both a natural born storyteller and a gleeful troublemaker par excellence. Powerful novels push powerful buttons. This is a book WE ALL HAVE TO READ -- brave, scary, with taboo-shattering scenes and humor that busts through barriers, and burrows under the skin. It has grit, bite, and doesn't back away from anything. BRAVO FOR BRAVURA, Dearman! Please keep those dogs barking -- we need you, and whether or not they know it, so do the dogs! Wonderful book.

The Great Bravura is a fast-paced story told from many angles, which keeps the story interesting and humming. Filled with excellent detail and dialogue and unusual characters. Just when the reader thinks she knows where the story is going - poof! - there's an unexpected twist, not unlike the magic tricks peppered throughout the story. A fun read!

This a great, well told story. It's dark, it's for adults and it's very smart. The characters are well drawn and their relationships felt real and passionate. The grimy, post war NYC atmosphere is well done. I'm not awfully familiar with noir film and literature, and it may add to the story if you're familiar with the genera. It's not necessary to know noir to enjoy the book.

The Great Bravura by Jill Dearman is the type of novel you'll eagerly press into friends' hands, insisting that this is too good a story to keep to yourself. If intriguing characters with real moxie are your thing, read this book. If the mystique of magic mixed with mayhem is your cup of tea, sip away. If, like me, you have a penchant for noir and wonder what kind of tale a modern-day Raymond Chandler and Dorothy Parker might concoct, author Jill Dearman is your gal. As I was reading this marvel of a novel, I kept thinking of Bette Davis in All About Eve when she proclaimed, "Fasten your seatbelts. It's going to be a bumpy night." The Great Bravura is one hell of a read. Buckle up and enjoy the ride!
