At first reading this appears to be a fun book about a boy magician with lots of ‘rabbit jokes.’ However, it is also a book about friendship, truth and loss.
It is a story of a little boy who wants a friend but finds that a friend who is a giant, smelly rabbit can put a strain on any friendship, but nevertheless does his best to keep his new and special friend Bruno a giant rabbit who talks, happy and faithful to him.
The story is set in the English countryside, with great descriptions of English village life and somehow the author bestows upon Bruno and Archie human characteristics that are easily recognisable. Bruno enables Adam to enjoy his fifteen minutes of fame as a ventriloquist but also teaches him that fame has to be built on truth if it is to last.
Adam and Bruno rescue Uncle Archie from the clutches of the magician Caro but Bruno begins to understand also that Adam cannot continue to deceive his parents and feed and shelter two giant talking and often rude and noisy rabbits and realises it is time to leave and return to the cornfield at the back of Adam’s house.
At first reading, the book appears to be a kid’s book with lots of silly rabbit jokes but it is more than that. It is about friendship and the sacrifice this can sometimes entail.
I hope that there is a sequel to this book somewhere in the imagination of the author. Where do these rabbits come from? Where is their private and magical world? Do they ever return to Adam?
