RT Reviews Top Pick, October 2016 A funny, heartfelt romance about how an antique shop, a wardrobe, and a mysterious tea cup bring two C.S. Lewis fans together in a snowy and picturesque Oxford, England.

Emelia Mason has spent her career finding the dirt on the rich and famous. But deep down past this fearless tabloid-reporter façade, there's a nerdy Narnia-obsessed girl who still can't resist climbing into wardrobes to check for the magical land on the other side. When a story she writes produces tragic results, she flees to Oxford, England--home to C.S. Lewis--to try and make amends for the damage she has caused.

Peter Carlisle was on his way to become one of Great Britain's best rowers--until he injured his shoulder and lost his chance at glory. He's determined to fight his way back to the top even if it means risking permanent disability to do so. It's the only way he can find his way past failing the one person who never stopped believing in his Olympic dream.

When Peter and Emelia cross paths on her first night in Oxford, the attraction is instant and they find common ground in their shared love of Narnia. But can the lessons from a fantasyland be enough to hold them together when secrets of the real world threaten to tear them apart? Cobblestone streets, an aristocratic estate, and an antique shop with curious a wardrobe bring the world of Narnia to life in Kara Isaac's inspiring and romantic story about second chances.

Right from the start, I knew that I was going to love this story. When Peter found the wardrobe and one coincidence after another lined up to make it impossible for him to forget Emelia, I was captivated. The story unfolded at just the right pace so that I didn't have all the pieces to the puzzle, and no idea how the author was going to pull everything together. The Narnia references were sprinkled throughout the story, just enough to be like diamonds sparkling in the snow. I absolutely loved the final chapter )i(

I’ll admit it: I’m a hopeless romantic; I hold degrees in English literature; I’m in awe of C.S. Lewis’s brilliance, and for as long as I can remember I have loved all things British. So when I first read the summary of “Can’t Help Falling,” I was pretty sure that I was going to love it. After all, Kara Isaac’s first book, “Close to You,” was hands-down my favorite novel of the whole year, and I’ve been so eager to read more of her work. But part of me also wondered if this second book could live up to the hype that was building in my head.

Seriously, I needn’t have worried. “Can’t Help Falling” is AMAZING, and it far exceeded ALL my expectations. In the second chapter, Peter and Emelia meet in a magical scene at an Oxford antique shop, and from that moment on, I was hooked. I barely put the novel down all weekend because I was so captivated by their beautiful story.

I think one of the things I love most about Isaac’s writing is the effortless way in which she blends the hope and fantasy of literary classics with contemporary reality. I’m someone who has always been drawn to fairy tales, to happily-ever-afters, to magical worlds that exist outside of this one, but at the same time, I tend to read a lot of contemporary Christian fiction in my free time. I love reading about REAL protagonists, characters who struggle and have flaws but who still find hope, redemption, and purpose. In this way, they find meaning and magic beyond the ordinary world (truly a metaphor for the gospel).

So for me, “Can’t Help Falling” merges the best of both worlds. It’s firmly planted in a contemporary Oxford setting, but Isaac so seamlessly weaves the details and magic from C.S. Lewis’s Narnia stories into the plot that it FEELS a little like a magical fairy tale. The underlying themes of unexpected miracles, redemption, grace, and forgiveness are all very reminiscent of the Chronicles of Narnia series as well.

But at the same time, Peter and Emelia are incredibly relatable. Emelia struggles with guilt and brokenness, but she's also passionate and super quirky; I found myself laughing out loud on more than one occasion at some of the predicaments in which she finds herself. Peter is an elite athlete, driven but still kind, patient, and adorably awkward. I love that neither of them are perfect. Too often Christian romantic fiction consists of a messed up character and a character who is just waiting for them to get their act together, but in this novel, Emelia understandably struggles with belief, and while Peter is a Christian, he is still realistically flawed and has his own issues to work through and be healed of. Peter & Emelia's love story is romantic, funny, heartfelt, whimsical, and yet it's also very authentic; consequently, the ending was even more emotional and satisfying because I felt like I had been on the journey with them.

Finally, I loved getting a window back into Jackson & Allie’s lives (from “Close to You”). My only complaint is that we didn’t get to see MORE of them. It’s not too often that I connect so deeply with novel characters, but I truly feel like I could spend a whole series of books with Peter, Emelia, Jackson, and Allie and I wouldn’t get tired of them. It’s only taken two books, but Kara Isaac has become one of my very favorite writers.Check out this novel - I promise you won't regret it!

I recently read the author's book Close to You, which I absolutely loved. So the bar was set quite high for her follow-up Can't Help Falling. And I love it as well. It is not humorous like Close to You - I would say it is more dramatic. The story has so many layers and is so well-written. I highly recommend this author and this book.

Emelia Mason is in Oxford, England seeking absolution for something horrific she feels she set in motion and she longs with all her heart to recreate herself in the process. Peter Carlisle just wants to return to the man he was before an injury sidelined him on the way to Olympic rowing glory. They are brought together by combined charitable work and a little bit of Narnian magic. The story that flows from that beginning contains more than a whiff of that fantastical place.

This was a marvelous book! I loved the underlying theme of C.S. Lewis' Narnia books that was woven throughout the whole story. It added a wonderful level of depth. Emelia was such a sympathetic character, I wanted her to find her happy ending, spiritually, emotionally and romantically. I hurt for the hand she'd been dealt in life and for the choices she made. Peter was a great foil for her, someone who got such a solid start and turned into such a solid guy but still struggled. Kara Isaac does such a wonderful job with characterization, I felt like I could really relate to these two people.

I also enjoyed the spiritual journey this book took me on from Emelia's point of view and, in the end, from Peter's as well. It can be almost impossible to find God in tragedy, especially if your introduction to Him is faulty. Emelia carried a lot of baggage on her road to redemption and the way this story portrayed God's pursuit of her was a lovely thing - even a little magical. Peter's struggle with forgiveness was so incredibly common and a message that we all need to remember. The ending was incredibly romantic, so much so, that I went back and re-read it the next day.

Can't Help Falling was a magical, meaningful story that spoke of forgiveness and the preciousness of each person to God. A deeply moving, yet whimsical treat, it was well worth the read. I'll be eagerly looking forward Kara Isaac's next great story!

This book is a bit of a sequel to Kara’s debut Close to You (which I haven’t read yet), so it has some spoilers in it, but I did have to appreciate Kara’s little Kiwi joke when it came to naming her characters. As a fellow Kiwi, I cannot say how delighted I am that we finally have authors emerging into the Christian Fiction scene! Go Kara!

This book was simply perfect in so many ways. How Kara presents God working in people’s lives was very authentic; It's the little things, coincidences that we don’t know about or if we do, we take them for granted, that add up to make big miracles, and we so often miss them because we are looking for large displays of magic. I hugged my Kindle when she made that point. Kara also wove the Narnia theme into the story without getting sappy or to the detriment of her own storyline.

Kara’s writing is a bit edgier in some ways than many Christian fiction fans will be used to. Too often, when the lead character is not a Christian, they still somehow are portrayed as living beautifully clean lives, but Kara captures the inherent difference in thought patterns of the unbeliever. A large part of the plot revolves around a Christian falling for a non-Christian, and Kara does address why this is not a good idea, far more forcefully than most Christian authors. However, there is still an element of playing with fire, and I instantly disconnect from a book a wee bit when that happens.

I was also a bit puzzled by the sudden appearance Victor’s childhood scar towards the end of the book. Maybe I just missed the mention, but he goes from being the most handsome man in London to having a scar that is a major plot element.

Notable Quotable: “Every single band member had a hearing aid. Probably turned off, going by the bumpy first few lines.”

Also the scene where they deal with the troublesome mother-of-the bride. Comic gold.
