This is the one. This book right here is the one I've been waiting for. I knew Sunniva had this in her. Her last three were great, I loved them...but this book I ADORED. I can't even explain how happy I am right now.

You have to know I'm a sucker for a bad boy rocker so I expected to like Emil. Plus he was entertaining in Walking Heartbreak and I had high hopes. But oh my God I never expected to love him like I do. Passionately! I never expected him to make me cry for him, to break my heart, to have me laughing and cheering and screaming. Emil's pain is palpable, his confusion tangible and his desperation so very emotional. This boy was just a beautiful broken mess.

Then in walks Aishe. Aishe is a character I just got. I totally understood her. She was determined and willful while still being insecure. She was both selfish and caring. She was a dichotomy. A wonderfully interesting dichotomy. I felt her every emotion...her confusion, her hurt, her fear, her lust, mostly her desperate grip on Emil.

I read a lot of books and I like a lot of books, but I am rarely surprised by a book. Clearly this book surprised me. In the best possible way. I don't trust Sunniva. I have said before that she is unconventional and unwilling to conform. It makes her a loose cannon. It makes her books a crazy exhilarating ride. I never knew what she was going to do next. And I LOVED that I never knew what she was going to do next.

This book was eloquent even when it was being crude and raw. It was so HOT and wrong and yet absolutely completely right. Perverted and sexy and sad and beautiful. It was crazy. Easily in my top 10 this year and a six star read for sure. This is a book I will read over and over again.

You never know what you are going to get when you open up a Sunniva Dee book. Well, you do. You get great writing, real characters, angst, and emotion. What you don't know is where she'll take the story.

And this book is no exception.

I don't think I've ever read a book quite like this one before. I had no idea who to root for. Ms. Dee's description of this book is completely accurate. Emil is the anti-hero. Aishe is the anti-heroine. You care about them because Sunniva Dee is the master at making her characters come alive on the page. They become real people, so your heart goes out to them. But at the same time, you can't deny their "anti-ness" in the story. Through a big chunk of the book, I was torn between wanting to hug them and wanting to slap them silly! But that, right there, is the sign of phenomenal writing. To make the reader care, to want more for the characters who've become more than just characters.

This book might test you. For some, it might be difficult to finish. You might want to throw the book/e-reader across the room (I don't recommend this. Instead consider a glass of wine and a bubble bath). You may even find yourself audibly yelling at the characters. But see? If those things happen, then the author has done what she's soooooo good at: She made you care.

And I think that's the magic of this book.

One thing I've learned from reading Sunniva Dee's work is that nothing's what it seems and she always manages to surprise me. This did on both accounts. I knew before going in that this was dark and different prior to her other works. 

I was deeply intrigued by Aishe's ancestry and their history of a certain affliction called "love fire". She was a very interesting character with so many layers. Especially how that "love fire" had influenced her and her cousin Shandor and their families were very riveting storytelling.
It was heartbreaking to witness Emil and him spiraling out of control. Not for one moment did I resent him and his actions. I was just feeling him and his heart breaking and as awful as it sounds it was beautiful. Not what he went through and had to go through but how Sunniva Dee chose to capture it and bring awareness to it. Her words are addictive. Literally. Dee can evoke so much feeling from the simplest words.
Aishe and Emil's relationship was complicated and my emotions were all over the place. I had certain goals/expectations for both of them and Dee delivered what I had imagined and what I wanted from certain characters. I was so pleased yet also surprised because she did it an exciting and unexpected way. In true Sunniva Dee style.

This story took me on a ride. An emotional one. It's not your usual contemporary romance and I appreciate that. Sunniva Dee's writing and storytelling is exceptional. I love that I don't know what to expect from her stories but I always leave satisfied and mesmerized when I reach the final page. I'm so ready to read more about the guys from Clown Irruption.

Sunniva is BRILLIANT!!!

This is not the typical contemporary romance. None of Sunniva's books are. Which is why I LOVE reading them!

This is one of those creatively brilliant works in that it shows light by showing darkness; much of the book dealt with some dark, heavy issues, but it made the ending that much brighter.

I was intrigued from the beginning with Aishe's mysterious "affliction." I eagerly turned the pages to find what it was all about. And Sunniva didn't disappoint. In fact, this whole book was an absolute page-turner because situations just kept popping up and I HAD to know how the book ended!

While I absolutely appreciate and applaud the direction in which Sunniva took this story, I can't say it was my absolute favorite. Without spoiling, there is definitely a Happily Ever After (several, actually), but another's ending was not as happy as it could have been, nor was the broken road that everyone had to take to get there.

Typing this now, I wonder if maybe the aforementioned "not as happily ever after" is the premise for an upcoming book? Because holy moly, that book will be AMAZING!!! (I got a taste of what that book might possibly be in this book, and it will be SMOKING HOT and emotionally intense!!!)

I am 100% Team Sunniva. This book is addicting and I've never read anything like it. I am a hardcore Clown Irruption groupie and I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK!!!!!!!!

n the Absence of You will take an emotional toll on the reader. It's raw and gritty and completely different than what I'm used to. There isn't sunshine and rainbows, but it honest—which is what I loved most about this story, its unique honesty, though brutal at times, I didn't expect anything less. Sunniva Dee has a way of creating the most powerful characters, and this story is no different. I read In the Absence of You in one sitting because I had to learn more, had to figure out what these emotional characters would do next. Shandor and Aishe, man, I love them! Their familial bond is so real and genuine. Aishe comes from a line of Gypsy's who are known for loving with their entire being, and that's what she does: love fire. But man, I wanted to shake her at times, tell her to be better to herself, that she deserved so much more than settling. But it wouldn't have been such an amazing story had she not gone after what she wanted. Another excellent bonus was reading more about Bo and Nadia from Walking Heartbreak (OMG! LOVE that book so hard!). Overall, I loved that I didn't simply go out of my comfort zone with reading In the Absence of You, I went way beyond the borders. A unique world filled with rock stars and glam but, I assure you, not everything is what it seems.
