An American lawyer dreams of killing his trophy wife in Thailand. A Vietnamese soldier goes mad in a haunted forest. A bereaved mother's trip to Cambodia ends in tragedy - or does it?
One of Asia's top female crime writers takes you on a spine-tingling journey from the jungles of Sumatra through Bangkok's seedy bars to the seemingly sedate streets of Singapore. Your traveling companions are a slew of dark emotions - fear, grief, jealousy, greed, lust and revenge. And your destination?
With flashes of black humor and hard-to-forget characters, these ten stories shine light into the dark corners of Southeast Asia.

Spot on characters!

10 quick reads that instantly transports you amongst the underbelly of SE Asia that you don't read about on tourist brochures. Fast paced with intriguing and unexpected twists, I've really enjoyed this book. Having lived in different parts of this region for many years, the characters in the book, from the Texan to the cub reporter, are spot on and their plight are understandably desperate and bleak. Looking forward to more stories from this author!

A beautifully written collection full,of surprises.

Fascinating stories, beautifully written, the tales quite different, not just in the settings but in tone. The discontent husband, the revengeful woman, all familiar characters yet written with intriguing twists worthy of the adult short stories from Raould Dhal.

NIFTY ENTERTAINING READ!

There are ten short stories all well written if a little predictable ..... (I live in S E Asia and am familiar with the backdrops.) However, I enjoyed two of them especially...the one about the Vietnamese soldiers in the jungle and the one featuring peanut oil!
The story about the man who tries to kill his Thai wife had a great ending..but the first person male narrator has the observational traits that only a woman would display...lipstick, shoe, fashion etc.so it had a " I'm pretending to write as though I were man" flavour.
Anyway...if you want a good, cheap, entertaining read I would recommend Elka Ray's book!

What You Don't Know, at first glance appeared to be one of those little collections of stories which one could take to read while waiting in the doctor's office or on a long subway trip or ferry ride. But....once I had consumed the first story, there was no putting Elka Ray's book down. I plowed through in two nights, intrigued by these tightly woven tales of obsession. Set in various SE Asian locales, the mysteries are enhanced by the exotic locations and the intrigue of the cultures. Ray is a writer with much promise.

I devoured this book! Elka Ray draws the reader in from the first sentence, using her beautifully succinct style to weave thought-provoking tales full of mystery and intrigue. Having lived in Southeast Asia as an expat, I found the characters unique and relatable. She manages to be entertaining, funny AND dark, the perfect combination for a highly entertaining read. I can't wait for more!
