First, how amazing, that I finished this book on the very same day it ends, in-universe. Some coincidences give more depth to a story filled with it.

I kind of want to continue this review with "Shira Glassman strikes again." Except it's not a strike, it's a warm blanket around your shoulder, a comfortable evening with friends around a campfire. OLIVE is everything I've come to love about the Mangoverse: rich characters who love each other and respect their quirks and strengths, ample diversity, unapologetic jewishness (I learn so much every time!), and thoughtful storylines.

And I want to talk about this last element more, because I thoroughly enjoyed the scale and depth of OLIVE plot-wise, the interweaving of moral dilemnas, personal stakes, and state politics into a coherent story and tough choices.

I remember well grief-stricken Shulamit from MANGO, and much like its queen, it seems to me that the Mangoverse keeps becoming more and more mature, and that is deeply satisfying.

This may be my favourite of the Mangoverse. Which is saying a lot seeing as I adore this series in all it's lightheartedness. I think because the stakes are so high in this book and things are really tense whilst also remaining fluffy... it was just a great read.

This is yet another fabulous installment in Shira Glassman's books about Perach and the world around it.

Shulamit is a thoughtful and blazingly generous ruler, the type we all would like to think we could be. Making hard decisions and loving imperfect people are hard to swallow for everyone, and I think everyone can relate to the struggle she has to come to terms with those things.

Queen Caroline was an intriguing figure - both for herself and for the way she impacted Shulamit's life. I was heartened to see her character develop and grow, even from a distance, between young Shulamit's memories and the present day.

Ultimately, of course, as with all of Shira's books, the day is saved, the guilty receive just punishment, and the heroes are happy and blessed. If the idea of guaranteed happy endings is not something you want out of your fiction, this may not be the book series for you, but I encourage you to try it anyway - you may find you like it better than you thought you would.

The Mangoverse books remain the sweetest of literary treats, especially for queer and disabled Jewish people, and I highly recommend them.

There's a very believable scene in this book about being an awkward teenage lesbian, unfortunately with a crush on a very straight woman. Poor Shula! This book also tackles slavery in the neighboring kingdom, albeit as an minor plot point instead of the primary drive. Didn't feel like lecturing at all, in a nice contrast to book two. And, of course, the whole book was adorable and fluffy.
