Having read Annie on my Mind a couple of years ago by Nancy Garden, I kind of knew what to expect, but I found this novel even more engaging. An aspiring young actress Jan is keen to play the lead of Elizabeth in her senior school play The Crucible after spending the summer at 'stock' which must be some kind of acting school.

Jan is devestated when she loses the lead to a newby, Kerry, who has never acted before and new to her school and town. But things change, wherin our story comes to light. Mix in a beloved teacher and play director having health issues, some bible thumping anti gay cast members and we have an engaging story. Nicely done I thought.

This novel can hardly be considered as a simple book for teenagers or as just a book about same sex love, althourg it was written for a young audience and althouugh one of its themes is the love between two girls.
But its plot is complex - not complicated - and is masterly carried out. In a way its complexity reminds the structure of a musical symphony and its simplicity the execution of this symphony by a great conductor.

This plot puts on stage a deep representation of the fight of justice against injustice, of honesty against mischievousness. And, in the end, good wins against evil because in this case good is logic, clear and natural, and evil is just the opposite. But of course, also because the world is becoming mature enough to understand how the good is good.

Reading this novel was a great pleasure from the beginning to the end with many moments of suspense and many moments of relief.

But a worthwhile read. The harassment the girls experience because of their suspected relationship is realistic and heartbreaking. The bravery required to come out is heartening. This is a fine novel for both gay and straight teens to read to gain better understanding of the difficulties of being gay in America. We need more books like this!

Jan had spent the summer acting in summer stock production. Kerry was the new girl in school and tried out for the school play. As their friendship grows and tension builds between the cast members rumours and jealousy flow. A great coming of age story of two young girls finding love.
