Gods They Had Never Known (English Edition) Kindle版

They will enhance your life,
Enlarge your fortune,
Strengthen your body,
Destroy your soul.

The Guardians look down from their mountaintop to the valley of men below—and they desire the women they see. Abandoning their rightful home, they infiltrate mankind peacefully…with disastrous consequences.

Haven, a young man of strong faith, lives in the pleasant valley that is now under invasion. A blind prophet has warned the people for years, but Haven is the only one listening. The Guardians, who look like men but are not, exchange wisdom of the mountains for the use of the mortal women. Everyone turns a blind eye to the monstrosities born of these unions in their greed for this forbidden knowledge that improves their lives.

As violence and depravity increase in the valley, Haven desperately tries to convince the people—and the woman he loves—that judgment is coming, putting himself in the crosshairs of both the Guardians and their malevolent offspring.

In this epic retelling of 1 Enoch: Book of the Watchers and Genesis 6:1-4, experience the plunge into chaos when the divine order of creation is violated, leading to idolatry, corruption, and the threat of extermination.

Let me start with a disclaimer: this book is not for everyone. There is mature content that definitely makes this NOT a YA book. Amazon categories list this as fantasy.
That being said, if you enjoy Biblical fiction, I’m sure you haven’t read one from this time period/event. I believe you might enjoy this “epic retelling of 1 Enoch: Book of the Watchers and Genesis 6:1-4,”-author’s description in quotes.

I was inspired to read this book, Gods They Never Knew, by J. S. Helms, because the author is an acquaintance (she owns a homeschool curriculum exchange near me) and this is a part/time of Scripture that I wasn’t familiar with. Nor have I ever read or known about a book set in this time/dealing with this topic.
I was surprised by the story and content, but this is a book that I will continue thinking of in the days and weeks to come. It sent me to the passage in the Bible, looking for more information.

5つ星のうち4.0 An "origins story" every Christian should know

It becomes apparent soon into the plot that this book could go in one of several directions—some of which the Christian reader may not want to go. Let me assure you that, unless you do not want to read a well-illustrated explanation for modern spiritual warfare, this book is not going to bite you. That being said, some of the descriptions of the evil within are…well…evil. I would not recommend this novel to a mid-grade or YA reader for this reason (although a more mature YA reader would probably be the best audience for the message).

Gods They Had Never Known begins by introducing Haven, a young farmer in a sheltered valley where God (Shalliyt in this world) protects them through the intercession of angelic beings known as “Guardians”. As the story unfolds we learn that there was a rebellion among the Guardians when Haven was a child, causing several of them to descend into the valley to pursue their own selfish pleasures against Shalliyt’s will. Now Haven has discovered that the girl he hopes to marry, Rachel, is being courted by one of these nefarious, rebel Guardians. Of course, Haven seems to be the only person who can see these Guardians for what they truly are—Rachel, her parents, and indeed, most of the other inhabitants of the valley, are blinded by the “blessings” brought into their lives by these “strangers from the mountains”. As Haven struggles to convince Rachel of the danger she is in, the story suddenly takes its first unexpected plot twist…

As a writer, I found myself analyzing the narrative style of this story; in the beginning, I expected it to follow the basic romance-genre plot, but I noticed that the narrative style did not seem to follow the “guidelines” of romance. Then the story took a turn away from the clean, wholesome relationship between Haven and Rachel and I began to realize that this was not a narration of romance. This was a book about spiritual warfare. And spiritual warfare can get ugly—no, it IS ugly. Always. After a few chapters following Haven and Rachel through their lives in the valley, the narration shifts to follow some of the other players and their roles in the unfolding story. There are several murders, rapes, and other acts of increasing depravity that help to illustrate the decayed morality of a world where God’s Way is not followed. Here the narrator does an excellent job of helping us to see through the eyes of the wicked, the deceived, and the innocent victims as they struggle with the consequences of rebellion. Of course, for the squeamish reader, this may be a hard pill to swallow.

Narration style aside, the one drawback I found that made it hard for me to “stay in the world” was the anachronistic collection of technology to which the Guardians were adding their own “sinful” contributions. Helms describes a bustling, metropolitan village with late-medieval housing construction, a money-based economy, and some amount of metalsmithing technology, but for some reason they have not discovered copper, perfume, medicine, or brightly-colored clothing--all of which cause corruption when the Guardians introduce them to the people. (To be fair, it is also hard for me to enjoy Disney movies where the semblance of linear history is not reflected in their technology.) What this book does well is to not only present a powerful origins-story for the “Rulers, Authorities, and Princes of this dark realm” (Ephesians 6:12) but to also warn modern readers about the intentions, the tricks, and the power behind these Princes.

5つ星のうち5.0 A must-read for all Christians!

Where did beings like Goliath come from? What happens to them when they die? This is often a controversial topic in Christian households. The author, Julie Helms, happens to be my dearest friend, and I can tell you, she has studied for many years, accumulating trustworthy information from legitimate sources, resulting in this fabulous, compelling historical fiction. The characters will grab your attention and imagination from the start! Based on 1 Enoch: Book of the Watchers and Genesis 6:1-4, the reader will be drawn into a world that reveals the corruption of fallen angels and how the Nephilim came into exsistence. The main character is completely devoted to God, and he is able to discern evil appearances via the warnings of a wise and godly man. However, he is greatly challenged when he tries to convince others of the evil presence. As a believer in Jesus Christ, my hope and security in Him was confirmed even more, as I was reminded of His protection in my life! A must-read for all Christians! This is Julie's first novel; I hope it's not her last!! "They sacrificed to demons that were no gods, to gods they had never known, to new gods that had come recently, whom your fathers had never dreaded." -- Deuteronomy 32:17

As a fellow author, this a book I wish I had written. It's an absolutely brilliant portrayal of the pre-Flood society and culture as noted in Genesis 6:1-4 and by Jesus in Matthew 24. It makes so much sense how the author has shown the various stages of the corruption of man and the world, from the falling of the divine beings, to their Nephilim offspring, to the rise of disembodied (demonic) spirits, to the mythical creatures that probably weren't so mythical at the time. I loved this book and am recommending it to others to whom I've been recommending Dr. Michael Heiser's The Unseen Realm. You won't be disappointed by this book if you have any sense of the supernatural in God's Kingdom.

I really enjoyed reading this book; It was very hard to put down. There were some parts that made me somewhat uncomfortable - some violent scenes that had to be part of it. I am quite able to drop a book that I don't like, but I never considered walking away from this one. It's left me with a lot to think about.
