On Wings of Devotion (The Codebreakers Book #2) (English Edition) Kindle版

4.7 5つ星のうち4.7 545個の評価

All of England thinks Phillip Camden a monster--a man who deliberately caused the deaths of his squadron. But as nurse Arabelle Denler watches the so-dubbed "Black Heart" every day, she sees something far different: a hurting man desperate for mercy. And when their paths twist together and he declares himself her new protector, she realizes she has her own role to play in his healing.

Phillip Camden would have preferred to die that day with his squadron rather than be recruited to the Admiralty's codebreaking division. The threats he receives daily are no great surprise and, in his opinion, well deserved. What comes as a shock is the reborn desire to truly live that Arabelle inspires in him.

But when an old acquaintance shows up and seems set on using him in a plot that has the codebreakers of Room 40 in a frenzy, new affections are put to the test.

5つ星のうち5.0 I Love this Story so Much!!!! I HIGHLY Recommend this Book!!!

On Wings of Devotion by Roseanna M. White is a wonderful story. In fact, it may be my new favorite Roseanna M. White novel. I was drawn into the plot from page one and could not put the book down. I love the way White writes. The prose flows so perfectly and the way she writes tension is outstanding. Part of the reason I could not put this book down is because everything is so tense — Ara’s fractured betrothal, Phillip’s constant harassment by an angry, bitter woman and his past catching up to him, and an evil German soldier and his lover waiting for the perfect moment to exact their nefarious plans against Britain. I just had to keep turning pages to find out what would happen next! At the same time all of this tension is happening a beautiful romance develops between Ara and Phillip that made my heart so happy. Ara and Phillip’s romance grows naturally and realistically, and is one of the best parts to this story.

Phillip is the best kind of hero. He is known as Black Heart but his heart is far from black. He is actually very sweet, very protective, and very loyal. But he just can’t get over the mistakes of his past. He holds onto them fiercely and refuses to let go. Again, the writing is so stellar that the reader can’t help but feel bowed down under the weight of all the sin and guilt and trauma Phillip insists he carry upon his shoulders. I love how Ara reinforces to him time and time again that he isn’t the Black Heart he thinks he is. Everyone needs an Ara in their corner — that one person who sees through all the negatives to the true person we are. What I love the most about Phillip is how desperate he is to protect Ara. He wants to protect her from pain and heartache, he wants to protect her from those who would take advantage of her and her millions, and he wants to protect her very life. It’s so romantic how he constantly puts Ara before himself. And, the final thing that I appreciate about Phillip is how realistic he is. Phillip is a sinner. He is a man of the world. But then trauma happens and his whole world view is turned upside down. Then he meets Ara and his life is forever changed. The journey Phillip undertakes to become the man Ara needs and the man God made him to be makes On Wings of Devotion such an excellent story. One I won’t forget anytime soon!

On Wings of Devotion is an excellent Historical Romance. It’s well written, fast-paced, and everything a reader could want in a WWI romance. I highly recommend this story. If you have not yet read this book, I implore you to purchase a copy for yourself today. You will not be disappointed in this beautiful novel!

***Recommendation*** On Wings of Devotion can easily be read as a standalone novel; however, I personally feel that to get the best reading experience you should read The Number of Love first.

I purchased a copy of this novel in paperback form from Roseanna M. White’s website in order to review. I also purchased a copy of this novel in eBook form from Amazon.com on August 17, 2020. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

5つ星のうち5.0 Loved this book!

As with it’s predecessor, On Wings of Devotion was completely clean with an incredible plot. There was more romance in this book but it was just as sweet as the other. And again, I learned A LOT. Last time, it was spies and codebreakers, this time it was pilots and nurses! But not just any type of pilot, actually it’s a pilot anticipating the firing squad....
Right from the start, I fell in love with Arabelle, our kind and generous nurse. And you might think that a good heroine might be boring and......you would be absolutely wrong! Arabelle had to learn from a young age what loneliness was and though she held onto her anger and hatred for a long time, the Lord finally opened her eyes and healed her. Ever since then, she learned that if she wanted healing, she should heal others.
One of the targets of her prayers is Phillip Camden. A practical heathen who is filled with, though he won’t admit it, regret. He loathes himself and wishes he would’ve died along side his squadron rather than continue his life of darkness.
Arabelle can feel his pain, it resembles the fury that she had displayed years before. She can see that the Lord is chasing him. Only He has the power to change a man.

This story was certainly exciting! Camden’s “Incident” was hinted at throughout the book but it slowly reveals itself at the end. That’s when it becomes clear what a noble man he really is. But Arabelle, she was simply amazing! One of my favorite characters that I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading about. She is just so good and Godly even amidst her suffering!
Similar to Margot from Book 1, Arabelle dealt in a compassionate manner towards the antagonist. I really love that about White, where instead of the enmity that is seen usually between the hero and villain, there’s more God-glorifying traits in the protagonist in her books.
The romance was very lovely and although Camden is sometimes annoyingly arrogant, the two made such a cute couple. It was endearing to watch them come together. The sweetest parts were when they stood up for each other even though they both had to lose something that was important to them.

All in all, I enjoyed the story immensely! And I hope I’ll be able to read (and review, maybe) the next book, A Portrait of Loyalty!

5つ星のうち5.0 A World War One romance mixed with espionage and codebreaking.

I loved this book. It is a World War One romance mixed with espionage and codebreaking.

The main female character is nurse Arabelle, who is a a mix of goodness, generosity and a quick temper.

The story begins when she loses everything she has hoped for and this message is delivered to her by ex-pilot Phillip. He carries a burden of guilt that he can’t escape from and a desire to push away everyone who tries to befriend him. Somehow he finds himself offering to be Arabelle’s protector and spending time with her and her adventurous father.

In the background to the romance is an undercurrent of suspense and all the main characters find themselves caught up in the war of spies.

This story drew me through the book from beginning to end. I loved how unusual the characters were and how their chemistry developed. I enjoyed both the suspense and the romance equally.

I look forward to continuing this series with the final book – A Portrait of Loyalty.

I moved through Wings of Devotion at a pretty good clip, until last night when I hit the final hundred pages at 11:00 PM and simply had to see what happened. Rarely does an author do this to me, but Roseanna M. White hit this book out of the park.

Arabelle captured my attention and heart from page one onward. She's the kind of woman I can only hope to be, with unwavering faith, unquestioning compassion, and enough moxie to punch a cheating fiance right in the nose. Now, that doesn't mean she's perfect; she admits to emptiness and anger, and sometimes makes negative choices or assumptions from those places. But her flaws are written so well, they make her more human, relatable, and sympathetic. If Phillip Camden is Black Heart in this novel, then Arabelle Denler is Gold Heart.

That's not to say Phillip deserves the Black Heart moniker, though--oh, no. He's a refreshing change from your typical hero, in that he's introverted, not a people person, and as bitter as day-old lemonade, but manages to remain likeable. As Arabelle learns, Phillip doesn't put everything on the line for just anybody, but once you're considered one of his own, he will move heaven and earth to protect you. His romance with Arabelle, while unconventional, is sweet with a characteristic and enjoyable edge, sort of like a dark chocolate candy bar. However, I liked Phillip's personal journey much better. The twist regarding his squadron, Lewis in particular, was part of what kept me up at night, and his spiritual thread was one of the best written I've seen in a while. Roseanna may be the only author I've read so far who can make a "jailhouse conversion" more sincere and bone-deep than a church conversion or a more, ahem, "respectable" iteration of the same thread.

The plot works as well as Number of Love's did, drawing me into the espionage and dangers of World War I and making me care about the stakes as well as the characters. The subplot involving Diellza Mettler played host for another great twist (although I did get tripped up on her name; I often caught myself calling her Drizella. Whatever). The villainous plot could've been confusing, but Roseanna balanced it so well, it comes across as it should--deceptively complex and frustratingly, deliciously diabolical. New secondary characters added some unique sparkle, and I also enjoyed seeing Margot, Barclay, and other characters again, however briefly. Roseanna has me hooked and ready for the last installment in The Codebreakers--may it hurry along!

I think my favorite thing about this book was the fact that it states from the beginning the Arabella was beautiful in the classical since. She also is an independent woman with her own aspirations and career. She and Phillip Camdon are thrown together by the events surrounding her betrayal by her fiancé. Phillip has a dark past of his own and both will eventually learn to see their true worth not only in the eyes of God but in the eyes of each other. One of my favorite parts of the story is how Camdon comes to view the plain and ordinary Ara as beautiful. As with other books in the this series, there is a mystery/intrigue subplot, WWI continues to rage and characters from the previous book in this series and in past series make cameo appearance which rewards the faithful Roseanna White reader with continuations of beloved story lines. This book can be read as a stand alone but will be more fun if read in the context of her previous novels. As always, the author does a masterful job with witty dialogue, carefully woven religious themes and historical accuracy. This book will appeal to fans of the author's previous books, fans of historical Christian fiction, historical English fiction, WWI fiction/romance/intrigue, early 20th century medical care, WWI intelligence, and Downton Abbey (era of Season 2). As with everything I have read by the author, I highly recommend this book.
