Can real love grow between a wallflower and an unrepentant rogue?

Sarah Drayton is eager to spend time with her best friend at her crumbling Northumberland castle estate. Matrimony is the last thing on her mind and the last thing she expects to be faced with on a holiday. Yet she finds herself being inveigled into a marriage of convenience with her friend’s rakish brother.

When James Langley returns to his family's estate, he can't be bothered to pay attention to his responsibilities as the heir. War is raging and he wants only distraction, not serious tethers. But his roguish ways have backed him into a corner, and he has little choice but to obey his father's stunning decree: marry before returning to war, or else. Suddenly he finds himself wedded to a clever and capable woman he does not love.

Sarah craves love and a place to belong, neither of which James offered before returning to the battlefront. Now everyone around her thinks she married above her station, and they have no intention of rewarding her for such impertinence. It isn't until her husband returns from war seemingly changed that she begins to hope they may find real happiness. But can she trust that this rake has truly reformed?

When tragedy strikes, this pair must learn to trust God and his plans. Will they be destroyed . . . or will they discover that even in the darkest depths of night, the morning still holds hope?

著者について

Award-winning author Carolyn Miller lives in the beautiful Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia. She is married, with four gorgeous children, who all love to read (and write!).

A longtime lover of Regency romance, Carolyn's novels have won a number of Romance Writers of American (RWA) and American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) contests as well as the Australian Omega Christian Writers Award. She is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers and Australasian Christian Writers. Her favourite authors are classics like Jane Austen (of course!), Georgette Heyer, and Agatha Christie, but she also enjoys contemporary authors like Susan May Warren and Becky Wade.

Her stories are fun and witty, yet also deal with real issues, such as dealing with forgiveness, the nature of really loving versus 'true love', and other challenges we all face at different times.

Her books include:
Regency Brides: A Legacy of Grace
The Elusive Miss Ellison
The Captivating Lady Charlotte
The Dishonorable Miss DeLancey

Regency Brides: A Promise of Hope

Finally a book that doesn’t have filth in it and is lovely to read! Thank you! It’s very rare to find something like this in historical romance.

Midnight’s Budding Morrow by Carolyn Miller showcases just how excellent a storyteller and writer Carolyn Miller is. I enjoyed this novel for several typical reasons: it’s fast-paced, it’s a unique story line, the characters are well-crafted, and the conflicts are many! This is another book I stayed up well past my bedtime to read. What I really enjoyed about this book is how many times I wanted to throw this book against the wall. I know, that sounds so odd a thing to like, but hear me out. When a book makes me that frustrated it’s typically because the characters are so well written and the conflicts so well depicted that everything feels so real and relatable. I wanted so badly to enter this narrative and shake some sense into each character. And the secondary characters … WHOA! Some of them need serious smacking upside the head. Yeah, I’m talking about you, Copely and Dawson. In all honesty though, it really was a very interactive read for me. LOL!

When I consider the book as a whole, what I enjoyed the most is James’s character. He’s so well-rounded. He begins as a deplorable rake. In fact, he’s really icky at first. And so mean to Sarah. But, as happens often, life kicks his butt a bit and James is led to a right and real relationship with God. What I really love about his character is how hard he works to make his earthly relationships better once he realizes just how badly he’s damaged them. I appreciate that he recognizes his part in the hurt and loss of trust. He never blames anyone for his part in the broken relationships. The whole novel is James’s journey to fixing things. It takes a lot of work (and I love that Miller illustrates this fact). There are days where James makes great strides in healing his broken relationships, but then there are days where he fails. And those fail days make one feel like giving up. But James doesn’t give up. Instead, he asks for forgiveness and tries again. I enjoyed watching James go from rake to hero. And what a hero he becomes!

Midnight’s Budding Morrow is an excellent story. I highly recommend this book. If you are a fan of fantastic Inspirational Regency Romances then definitely purchase a copy of this story today. You will not be disappointed you did!

I purchased a copy of this novel in eBook form from Amazon.com on May 30, 2022, in order to read and review. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Picture yourself as a young wallflower in Regency England, an orphan from a respected but not wealthy or titled family, who has been invited to stay at her best friend’s family castle. Now imagine one of the least likely young men you would want to be forced into marrying. A drunkard. A rogue. A gambler. A man who has already shown that he neither respects you nor wants to take responsibility for his life. If you could envision these circumstances – and how you might feel about them – then you have a pretty good idea of where Sarah Drayton finds herself before we are too long into Midnight’s Budding Morrow.

Like its predecessor (which is not necessary to have read first), the newest novel in Miller’s Regency Wallflower series pulled a wide range of emotions from my heart. I grieved with Sarah multiple times throughout the story, as she repeatedly hopes (and fails) to find love and belonging. Her absent husband who does not want to be married to her is actually the least of her disappointments. But I also smiled at the sweetness of God to redeem broken lives, and my heart swelled at the power of grace & restoration. I became invested in Sarah, and while James took much longer for me to warm up to, I still cheered (and grinned and swooned) as love grew softly in these two fractured hearts.

Too often, fictional characters who have a ‘come to Jesus’ moment and do, in fact, come to Jesus as a result are then almost never seen struggling with their sin nature again. I think this does a great disservice to readers who wonder why they still struggle even under grace. So, although James still had moments where his treatment of Sarah frustrated me after he returned from war as a new creation in Christ (particularly his tendency to believe the worst of her & lash out with angry words), I’m actually glad that the author didn’t suddenly make him perfect. Instead we see him continuing to grow in repentance as well as love for Sarah, which made me love him by the time the book ended.

Bottom Line: A little bit Jane Austen & a little bit Jane Eyre, Midnight’s Budding Morrow combines everything lovely about Carolyn Miller’s writing voice with a gothic undertone and sweet notes of grace. The characters, the setting, the passage of time, and even the way the marriage-of-convenience trope is handled are uniquely crafted to set this story apart from the familiar. I appreciated the portrayal of how grief affects us & our mental health differently – from the subtle to the dramatic – and the promise that one day the midnight of sorrow gives way to the dawn of joy. Midnight’s Budding Morrow is a romance, yes, but even more so a beautiful portrait of grace that you don’t want to miss.

(I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I purchased for my own collection.)

“God is a Redeemer, One who turns the weak into the brave, who can use the broken ones to save.”

I cannot love Midnight’s Budding Morrow by Carolyn Miller enough. A Regency Romance, Midnight’s Budding Morrow explores themes of drunkenness; depression; plus, searching for acceptance and deep, forever love. Miller also presents the flip side. Redemption and forgiveness are centerpieces of this amazing novel I couldn’t read fast enough.

Unfortunately, the inferiority that plagues Sarah Drayton may be far too easy for many readers to identify with. James Langley’s behavior is also easy to imagine. Miller has done a great job of producing realistic, imperfect, and relatable characters, whose growth will depend upon whether their faith can rise to meet the challenges.

I loved the way that we see the maturation of both characters, as they grow into the roles they have been called to fulfill. Yet, both are imperfect, which drives the novel, along with the machinations of shrewd and conniving tertiary characters.

I could not read this book fast enough, yet I wanted to savor every word, every scene. And I ugly-cried. Books rarely make me cry. These people of Miller’s-for they are no longer merely characters on a page- will live on with me for some time. This novel hit every sweet spot in my requirements for memorable, top-of-its-category Regency Romance. Problems are impossibly deep, God’s Grace is deeper.

Notable Quotables:

“Nothing mattered. No one would remark on her absence. She was nothing. Nobody. Of no value. Of no importance. She was a failure. A failure as a wife. A failure as a mother. She had failed to be accepted.”

“God didn’t see her. He didn’t care. He hadn’t cared before, so why would He pay attention now?”

“Broken, but being healed by God.”

“It is most wonderful to see how God can restore the brokenhearted, and free those who have been bound to their pasts.”

“When we’re in the depths of midnight’s pain and darkness, we cannot see that God is still working goodness for tomorrow.”
