かなり抒情性の高い方だと思います。

もちろん高度なテクニックで圧倒する場面も多々ありますが、
最後の３曲については、
聞きながら自然と涙が出ることもあります。

荒唐無稽な話になるけど、このアルバムがドリームシアターのファーストアルバムなら当時の私はぶっ飛んでいたと思う
完成され過ぎたアルバムと
だけどドリ虫はイメージ～から積み重ねてきた粗っぽさが味としてある
ポートノイのトコトコがあまりないのはむしろ狙いなのでは？
ドラムの音はやや後退しているが曲は抜群に良い
だが粗っぽさがない
シャープにまとまっている

初アマゾンレビューです。
文が読みにくいかもしれませんが、一番好きなバンドなので頑張って書いてみます。
参考程度に自己紹介。ドラマーで個人的にDTをコピーしていました。好きな曲はヘルズキッチン。

ではまず、ドラマー２人に思う事

マイクマンジーニ（新ドラマー）に思ったこと。

・曲調を意識してくれていて、テクニックももっているのにアンサンブルに徹する協調性がグッド。
・そのせいか、でしゃばらない事を意識しすぎで、三点セットだけみたいな場面を多く感じた。DTには多様性を感じたいところだったので残念。
・メロに合わせてユニゾンしすぎで飽きる。マンネリ予防に所々外したりしたほうが良かったように思う。
・個人的にドラムセットの音があまり惹かれない。

マイクポートノイに思ってたこと。

・ドラムセットの音が好き。特にスネア。
・ドラムフレーズがクセがあり（個人的にはカッコイイと思うフレーズが多い）音源聞くだけで、ポートノイかな？と気づける。
・だがそれが悪く出る場面も多く、例としては、バックボーンとなったバンドのドラムフレーズ丸パクリ、同じフレーズの使いまわし、等。
・メロディパートとユニゾンしたりするが、時にわざと外して激しいリズムを入れたりするのがグッド。
・歌いたがる。たまにそこは出てこなくて良いよ〜(-_-;)って思うときがある。
・良くも悪くも新しい風を吹き込む。

オーディション映像見る限り、マンジーニを選んだのは良かったと思う。協調性ありそう＆テクニックもあり、特徴がありすぎるプレイをしてDTっぽさを消すようなことはしなさそう。
だが、悪く言えばサポートドラマーみたいで、今作は個性が見えない出来になってしまった。そして個人的にこのプレイでは、ドラマーとしてコピーしたいと思わなかった。

次会作はマンジーニの本領発揮が見たい。

そして今作の感想。

全体の雰囲気は近年のアルバムに比べ、メタルっ気が薄く無難な仕上がり。無難といったがバラード調の曲は良い意味でDTらしかったし、捨て曲みたいなのも存在しなかった。そもそもDTほど有名になったバンドなら、バンドマスター抜けてからのオーディション後の初アルバムなので保守的な内容になるのは仕方ないし、ポートノイが脱退したのはバンドのマンネリ防止のためにも必要な段階、と前向きに捉えたい。

ただ、他の評価が高い方ですら軽く言われていますが、ストレートに言ってしまえば印象が薄いアルバムだった。
メリハリがなく曲調が似ていて緊張が足りなく感じる。展開でおお！って思える場面がもっと欲しかった。
こんなこと言いたくないがそのせいで耳に残るメロディが割と少なかった。（これがけっこうショック・・・）
大体どのアルバムにも１曲はハマって延々リピートし続ける曲があったりするのだが・・・

なんだろう？アルバム総合力が突出してないのに魅力がバランス良く分散した感じ。
だから☆４付けたいのだけれど、うーんホントに☆４かな？☆4.2くらい？いや、3.7かな〜、いいや四捨五入するか！って考える、そんなアルバム。

とにかく最近のDTに対してどういう不満をもって、どういう期待をしていたかで評価が分かれるので（極端に悪くはならないが）、聞くなら先入観はもたずに聞いたほうがいいですよ。

私はジョンペト信者です。彼の６３万のシグネイチャーギターで毎日ドリムシ弾いてきました。
ジョンペトとタッグを組んで作曲やコーラスなど行なっていたポートノイが脱退したときは、
今までありがとう、ドリムシ…とヤケクソになってギターを弾いていましたが。

結果的に、ペトルーシの力が大きいもののマンジーニ以外のメンバー作曲作品が多いということで（前からですが）、
バンド内の雰囲気も良くなったのかなと。ただポートノイが居なくなった今後は、「CONSTANT MOTION」
「THE DARK ETARNAL NIGHT」「Prophets Of War」のような感情的、攻撃的な曲がなくなるでしょう。

今回のアルバムを聞いていると非常に不思議な感覚に陥ります。懐かしくも、切ない感じ？
ボーカルのメロディは怪しく意味深でありながらも綺麗で聴きやすいです。

ギターは過去にないくらいに凄まじいです。テクニック的には抑えているようですが、
１曲目のイントロのアルペジオ、これを聞いた時点でペトルーシがこのアルバムでどれだけ面白いことをしたのか、
見当がついてしまいました笑
毎度のことですが彼は「THE BEST OF TIMES」のようにクソ長いソロでも１音毎に飽きさせない、凄いフレーズを延々と弾けるのですが、
かの「Pull me under」の８小節ソロのように、「On The Backs Of Angels」でも短い時間で凄まじく工夫されたフレーズを弾いています。
ラストの２小節スウィープとオールフルピッキングフレーズを聴いたときは思わず電車内でニヤけてしましました笑

ドラムに関してはマンジーニがオーディションで話してたように、当然マイク☆ポートノイに代われる人？は
どこにもいないのでマンジーニに過度な期待はできませんが、正直ここまでポートノイの演奏を再現出来る人がいるとは驚きでした。
マルコミンネマンもヴァージルドナティも、ドラムをやってて知らない人は居ないレベルですが、
やはりドリムシの後任と考えると印象が弱いですね。
ただ一つ気になったのはマンジーニがオーディション時に「僕はポートノイの代わりをやるつもりはない」旨の話をしてましたが、
「彼の後任を務められるほど僕はすごくない」とは言ってませんでしたね？
私は「ポートノイより凄いものを築きあげていくつもりだ」という認識をしましたが、間違いですか？
ま、いずれにしても初期の「イメージズアンドワーズ」のような工夫が少なく、音圧が低く、印象が薄く、スリルに欠けた作品とは
一線を画す、過去最高作品が出来あがりました！

これでもかとタイトに締め上げられたドラムサウンドの硬直感がそのままバンドの
有様を象徴してたような近年のドリームシアター、、、

数々の掟を下敷きにバンドを推進させてきたスーパードラマー、
ポートノイが去って、柔軟性とシナるようなグルーヴをもつ
マンジーニさんの参加、、、まずリズムのキャラクターがすっかり変わった。
（たとえそれがペトルーシによるプログラミングのトレースだとしても、、、）

そして、重い蓋が取れて、まるでパンドラの箱が開いたかのような
ほとばしるポジティヴな音的アイディアを偏執狂すれすれの
精緻なアレンジでまとめ上げられた楽曲群！

ヘヴィでメタリックな要素をちりばめながらも、メロディアスで
シンフォニックな曲間の展開、動と静、押しと引き、、、緩急を付けた
サウンドメイクは近年の定量圧の作品とは一線を画す仕上がりになっている。

象徴的なのはギターとキーボードのユニゾンによるヘヴィな重低音リフが影をひそめ、
ルーデスの持つ高い音楽性が生かされている点にある。

そして、なにより！ヴォーカル単独カナダ録音を敢行したラヴリエの
歌いっぷり！歌い手たるもの、自身のメロディによる自分の詩を
歌ってこそのモティベイションってあると思う。

実はポートノイを反面教師にしつつ、メンバーの才能を有機的に融合させ、
自身の制作欲を極限まで高めたプロデューサー、ペトルーシは確信犯。

ジャンル外から観ればかなり異形のロックだが、まさかここまで！の
出来の良さだと思う。

Systematic Chaos（2007年）を聴いたとき、
行き詰っているのかな？と思い、
このままではDTから自分が離れて行ってしまうような気がしました。

でもBlack Clouds ＆ Silver Linings（2009年）で（自分的には）持ち直したところに
マイク・ポートノイの脱退・・・。

DTの舵取りは彼であると思っていたので、決定的なダメージであると直感しました。

その中でのこの新作は、いい意味で裏切ってくれました。
まさに表題のとおりです。

マイク・ポートノイがかかわらなかったことが影響しているのか、
リズム主体の「ガツガツ感」が薄くなっており、
これまでの作品と比較すると、じっくり聞ける作品となっております。
次回作ではマイク・マンジーニからのインプットを期待し、
更なる成長作を発表してほしいと思います。

このアルバムは軽く100回以上は聴いています。
マンジーニのテクニックはポートノイの数段上で、おそらく世界指折りのドラマーと言っていいでしょう。
本作品内でも随所に、特に#6は神業的なドラムプレイが光っています。
だからと言ってマンジーニにポートノイのような創作をしろと言ってもできないでしょうし、
陳腐な言い方をすればポートノイはオンリーワン的なドラマーだっと言えます。

テクニックがどうとか言う意味でなく、これだけ活動期間の長いバンド(マンネリ傾向)に
新しいDNAが入ったことはとても歓迎すべきことであり、次回作はさらに新鮮な作品になるであろう期待が持てます。
マンジーニはあまり長期間同じバンドに居続ける人では無いのでいつかはポートノイが帰ってくるかも知れず、
その頃はマンジーニの残したものと融合してさらなる進化と回帰があるかもという妄想すら湧きます。

今回は付属DVDの内容が良いらしいですが、DVDの付いてない普通盤を買ったため少し羨ましいです。
現時点でも初回限定盤が買えますが・・

また、本作は独特で澄み切った音質で録音されています。
24bit/96khzのハイレゾFLAC音源がアメリカのサイトから購入できるので興味のある方は確認してください。
サイトを紹介したいのですが、ここにURLを書くと宣伝になるのでググってください。
より大きな器となるハイレゾフォーマット用にリマスターされており、音質はさほど変わらない気がしますが、
音圧のバランスが良くなり聴きやすくリミックスされていますよ。

This is a great album from Dream Theater. The CD has been manufactured in India and its quality is second to none. Complete inlay booklet with quality printing is supplied just like import CDs. Full 5 stars for the product. Delivery was also completed well within the promised delivery period. One star has been deducted due to inappropriate packaging and en-route handling of package. The back pane of CD jewel case has taken some serious blows and developed multiple cracks during transit. Maybe a cardboard box protection above bubble wrap would have helped combating en-route shocks. Thanks for a great product.....

La canción que lo "peta" de este disco: Breaking All Illusions (pista 8)... Sin palabras. El solo del Petrucci más elegante del disco: es de un sonido limpísimo, composición extrema. No hace falta ir a 10E+48 punteos/minuto para dejar en shock a la gente xD

RESUMEN: (más o menos, pista a pista)
- On the Backs of Angels (pista 1): el disco empieza tal y como termina el Black Clouds and Silver Linings... con el romper de olas y unas gaviotas en la lejanía. Una de las mejores canciones encargadas de abrir álbum.
- Build Me Up, Break Me Down (pista 2) se podría definir como la más "comercial" del disco. Tanto es así que la pusieron en su momento en RockFM xD. Muy pegadiza, te hace venirte arriba.
- Yo definiría Lost Not Forgotten (pista 3) como la más progresiva del disco. Virtuosismo puro.
- A lo largo de la gira correspondiente a este disco, DT habría sus conciertacos con Bridges in the Sky (pista 5). Os podeis imaginar... Me quedé impactado cuando la tocaron en directo, brutal.
- Muy valiente la letra de Outcry (pista 6), basada en la primavera árabe de ese mismo año 2011.
- This is the Life, Far from Heaven y Beneath the Surface (pistas 4, 7 y 9, respectivamente) son una muestra de que este grupo es mucho más que sólo metal. Muy buenas baladas, con mucha carga sentimental y musicalmente muy buenas.

MATERIAL EXTRA:
Esta edición viene con un DVD y el documental The Spirit Carries On en el que los miembros de la banda te explican cómo tuvo lugar la elección del nuevo batería tras la (inexplicable) marcha de Portnoy. Te enseñan las pruebas, cómo las diseñan para pillar a los aspirantes, los escalones de los exámenes... y todo ello envuelto en una OST genial basada en una colección de sus temas... hay un momento en el que sale el skyline de NY con la canción Wait for Sleep que te hace estremecer. Es muy muy interesante ver cómo estos tíos trabajan. También hay momentos muy emotivos en los que te das cuenta de que realmente son familia.

PRESENTACIÓN:
La caja es de categoría, libreto muy bien diseñado y materiales de alta calidad. Disfrutas hasta de cuando vas a coger el disco.

VALORACIÓN GENERAL:
Simple... excelente. Puro Dream Theater.

Sé que cada uno tenemos nuestras preferencias. Eso es lo bueno del metal. Eso lo hace grande. Y a pesar de ellas, todos formamos una gran familia. Es cierto que se podría decir que este disco vuelve un poco a la esencia anterior al Scenes from a Memory de 1999 (por dios ese disco es brutal, álbum conceptual sobre una historia guapísima, todas las canciones siguiendo el hilo de la anterior). Para mí, es un error minimizar la calidad de discos como 6 degrees (2002), Train of Thought (2003), Octavarium (2005) o Systematic Chaos (2007) para ensalzar la grandeza de este disco... Me podría poner a recitar cancionacas de esos discos pero sería una locura xD. No hay nada más que decir que fue precisamente con el Train of Thought con el que lo reventaron a nivel mundial aún más. Por cierto todos estos discos con canciones de la 12-Step Saga comenzando con "The glass prison" y finalizando con "The Shattered Fortress".

Me parecería un error pensar: "Me lo compraré porque vuelve a la esencia de Dream Theater y no se parece a los discos de la década de los 2000".
Todo lo contrario, yo lo compraría precisamente porque continúa siendo, esencialmente... puro DREAM THEATER!!

After having this album and listening to it regularly for about 2 months, I can safely say that Dream Theater has done it again, going back to their own roots, but with fresh new content that will not disappoint in the slightest!

When I heard about the departure of Mike Portnoy, I was certainly disappointed, in fact I was skeptical if they could keep making as great of music as they have in the past. All in all I decided to buy it, and it was a decision I do not regret. Of course it will take a few listens through to really get accustomed to it and appreciate how good it is, so don't listen to the reviews on here that have only listened to it once or twice. This album is an excellent mix of progressive rock and soft ballads, with Dream Theater going to both ends with no problems, performing each with flawlessness. Every song on this album will send chills down your spine!

James Labrie performs each song with emotion and talent, going from rough and powerful lyrics like in "Lost Not Forgotten" and "Build Me Up, Break Me Down", to soft and graceful lyrics like in "Beneath the Surface" and "Far from Heaven". I personally love how amazing his voice sounds in "This is the Life". It almost seems as if his voice is improving with age!

John Petrucci amazes with precision guitar playing, and melodic riffs and solos. He truly used the best of his abilities on this album. "Lost not Forgotten" has one of the longest solos I've heard to date, but of course not far from the best. The solo in "This is the Life" is moving and inspiring, one of the best on the album in my opinion. Of course you can't disregard the superb guitar playing in "On the Backs of Angels", "Outcry", "Breaking All Illusions", and in fact every other song on this album. You have to buy it and listen to them yourself to see!

John Myung keeps up with his reputation of being one of the greatest bass players, filling in the music for a "wholesome" sound. You can hear him when you need to, and when it fits with the music, one example being "Breaking All Illusions". Speaking of which, the lyrics he wrote for this song are awesome, with Labrie singing it to his full potential. One thing I noticed though is that higher frequency bass notes seem to be cutoff, a result of the producer not being familiar with their style I assume, not because of Myung. Still, he is an excellent and necessary piece in this album.

Jordan Rudess uses his amazing keyboard skills to up the level of greatness in each song. His riffs add style to the music, and blend perfectly with guitar. Rudess does A LOT of piano playing in this album, but trust me it completely fits in, since this album is more melodically driven than the previous ones, an example of his great piano playing being "Outcry". He has refined his sound and blended it in with the whole band.

Now comes Mike Mangini, one of the most talked about people on this album. To keep it simple, you can't judge his playing based on this album only. That is because the drum patterns for each song were already written by the rest of the band and sent to him for recording. Of course he added his own stuff in, and I think that he plays it perfectly and dynamically. The drums for this album are awesome, but resemble mostly session drums. Also, Andy Wallace (the producer) mixed in the drums too low, everyone has noticed this, but it is still listenable as a whole. Truthfully I can't wait until the next album to really see what potential this guy has! (And I believe it to be very great)

As a whole, this album is well worth your money. One of the finest since Images and Words. It is a must for every Dream Theater fan! And like the title of my review says, it is truly a new beginning.

MY favorite songs in order: (Of course none of them being bad, just a tiny bit less great than the last)
1. Outcry (Pure progressive rock at its finest)
2. This is the Life (Moving and inspiring lyrics with superb guitar solo)
3. Breaking All Illusions (Classic Dream Theater material)
4. Bridges in the Sky (Weird beginning and ending, but great prog)
5. On the Backs of Angels (Awesome solo and Labrie's voice)
6. Beneath the Surface (Sure to bring tears to your eyes the first time around)
7. Lost Not Forgotten (Reminiscent of Under a Glass Moon)
8. Far from Heaven (Great ballad, considering there is 3 on here!)
9. Build Me Up, Break Me Down (This would be good radio material)
