For anyone curious about Disney SEA this is a good place to start. Even though it is a book written for kids I was able to power through this book in a very short time period and keep all of the story intact.
This is a great first stepping stone for SEA and I cannot wait to read the other book that has already been published.

One of the most beloved stories from The Walt Disney Parks is now a romping middle grade adventure series! High-tech wizardry, old world legends and a little bit of Disney magic all shine through in Shinji Takahashi and the Mark of the Coatl, the first book in the Society of Explorers and Adventurers series from renowned best-selling author, Julie Kagawa.
"One cannot fight destiny, boy. Even if one did not ask for it. The idol calls for you, and you must answer its call..."
Shinji Takahashi is just an ordinary kid. An ordinary homeschooled smart-alecky kid being raised by his globe-trotting aunt Yui. But when a magical guardian decides to use him as a conduit to awaken its power, Shinji’s life takes a turn for the anything-but-ordinary. Captured by the menacing Hightower Corporation, which is bent on using the guardian’s magic for its own nefarious purposes, Shinji must team up with a brilliant young tech whiz named Lucy and her robot mouse, Tinker, in order to escape.
Together the two turn to the venerable Society of Explorers and Adventurers and its ragtag cast of spelunkers, hackers, mapmakers, pilots, and mythology experts (among other things) to return the guardian to its rightful home and release Shinji from its magic―which seems to be draining his life force. Time is ticking, the Hightower Corporation is in hot pursuit, and success or failure might depend on one small thing―Shinji finally coming around to the belief that he is anything but ordinary.
Based on the Society of Explorers and Adventurers lore that exist across the Walt Disney Parks, Shinji Takahashi and the Mark of the Coatl is the first book in an all-new action-adventure series that brings S.E.A. into the twenty-first century through a blend of science and magic.

著者について
Julie Kagawa is the New York Times bestselling author of the Iron Fey, Blood of Eden, Talon, and Shadow of the Fox series. She was born in Sacramento, California. But nothing exciting really happened to her there. So, at the age of nine she and her family moved to Hawaii, which she soon discovered was inhabited by large carnivorous insects, colonies of house geckos, and frequent hurricanes. She spent much of her time in the ocean, when she wasn’t getting chased out of it by reef sharks, jellyfish, and the odd eel. She worked as a professional dogtrainer for several years, dodging Chihuahua bites and overly enthusiastic Labradors, until her first book sold and she stopped training to write full time. Julie now lives in North Carolina with her husband, two obnoxious cats, and a pair of Australian Shepherds that have more Instagram followers than she does. You can follow her on Instagram or Twitter @JKagawa or check out her website at juliekagawa.com.

Fun little book
2022年8月30日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
This was a fun little book only if you like SEA to begin with. What is SEA? Its a mythos the imagineers of Disney have created to serve as background stories to their rides, restaurants, etc. There is a string that connects all of these places together with stories and characters. The mission of SEA as found on a plaque in Oceaneer labs is as follows;
“The Mission of the Society of Explorers and Adventurers is to collect, conserve, and curate valuable cultural and artistic artifacts from around the world and to make them available to the public in an artistically pleasing and sensitive manner.
It is furthermore the mission of this organization to equip and mount socio-cultural expeditions to discover, explore, chronicle, and protect the artistic achievements of human society, past and present, exalted and forgotten.”
The mission seems to have changed in this book to include apologizing for the founders collecting artifacts to display in the museums, returning artifacts, protecting environment, making corporations the antagonist, all the usual liberal stuff that Disney is prone to of late. But its suble and not preachy where it takes away from the story. Its just sprinkled here and there to give an eye roll because it is forced into the story and doesn’t flow naturally.
This book felt a lot like the sequel trilogy of Star Wars having a new generation of characters in a later era striving to capture the same spirit of the lore from the original. But to be fair this book was targeted to middle schoolers and had to be relatable to them. However I remember very fondly as a middle schooler enjoying The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles and the many Indiana Jones choose your own adventure book. So I’d argue you don’t need to be contemporary in order to appeal to middle schoolers. This book could have been done around the original era.
I was hoping it would have more of the original SEA characters in the book. While some of them are mentioned we don’t really get to meet them. I’m just afraid that as Disney expands on the SEA lore its going to make much of the luster go away. Part of the fun of SEA are the vague details, the obscurity, having to use imagination to fill in the blanks. The people that know of SEA really get into SEA. Its a nice little niche right now so not many know of it. But as it gets more commercialized I’m afraid its going to run away from them and will be another IP ran into the ground through its dilution.

A strong start to an exciting new series. I've been a fan of Kagawa for awhile now and this book did not disappoint. I'm really looking forward to following the adventures of Shinji, Lucy, and all of the eccentric members of SEA!!
