Kate Elizabeth Russell is originally from eastern Maine. She holds a PhD in creative writing from the University of Kansas and an MFA from Indiana University. My Dark Vanessa is her first novel.

同年代の高校生よりも賢くて大人びていた15歳のヴァネッサは、カリスマ性がある42歳の英語（日本で言う国語）教師のジェイコブ・ストレインと性的関係を持っていた。それから17年後、#MeTooムーブメントで各界の大物男性が次々と性的暴力やセクシャルハラスメントで追求されるようになり、ストレインも過去の学生から性的虐待で訴えられた。ストレインを訴えた被害者の女性は、同じ体験を持つ者としてヴァネッサに協力を求めてきた。だが、ヴァネッサはどうしてよいか決めかねる。なぜなら、十代の頃の自分は、自由意志でストレインとつきあっていたと信じているからだ。ストレインは自分にとって初恋の相手であり、その後も断続的に関わってきたからだ……。

My Dark Vanessaの優れたところは、年上の男性から性的虐待のターゲットにされた若い女性が陥る心理的な罠を見事に描いているところだ。加害者は、被害者に「これは君が自由意志で選んだことだ」「私にとって君だけは特別の関係だ」と信じさせる。いわゆるガスライティングである。被害者はそのために加害者を責めることができなくなり、その心理的な傷によって人生を破壊され続ける。

それを描いている点で、My Dark Vanessaは上記のミラーの回想録よりも優れた作品だと思う。問題は、そのセオリーを打ち立てた後も、ダラダラとそれが続くことだ。読んでいるほうが心理トラウマを起こしそうで、「もうわかったから、そろそろやめてくれ」と言いたくなる。

Vanessaのような体験がある読者にはどん底に沈みそうな辛い小説かもしれないので、注意しながら読んでいただきたい。

This book really got to me. How further I got into the story how more my perspective of the character changed and my opinion on various topics. I kept thinking about it for days after I finished it. I think its amazing.

It was a tough one. Don't get me wrong. The writing is really good, but read the trigger warning before you start this one. It has graphic descriptions of child abuse and not in a forceful way but in a gentle way that's manipulative. Go ahead, comparing this one to Lolita. It is sometimes similar to lolita because of its subject matter, but unlike Lolita, the narrator and protagonist is the victim who in her adult life tries to comprehend what she thought to be love might have been manipulation and abuse.
The book came in good condition.
