Finding Miracles: Escape from a Cult (English Edition) Kindle版

4.6 5つ星のうち4.6 15個の評価

A compelling and powerful account of the abuse and trauma experienced by Andrew LeCompte during his time in a spiritual community, based on the massively popular self-study book A Course in Miracles.

"This book is at once a personal journey toward love and a warning to others. A must read!" -
Sarah Edmondson, author of Scarred: The True Story of How I Escaped NXIVM, The Cult That Bound My Life

“This gripping memoir demonstrates how an intelligent man can be gradually seduced by a cult.” -
Dr. Steven Hassan, one of America's leading cult experts, Director of Freedomofmind.com

"A poignant exploration of the psychological manipulation used by cults." -
Kirkus Review

A lack of love in an authoritarian household sparked Andrew’s lifelong search for love and belonging. His AA sponsor introduced him to
A Course in Miracles, which Andrew studied deeply for twenty years. Then a celebrated spiritual teacher invited him to edit his first book and join his community. Andrew had been led to believe that he was chosen to find the Love of God. After a heart-rending parting from his family, he moved to Utah and joined the community.

He had some amazing early experiences while teaching the Course in Mexico, Spain, Hawaii, and Canada, some of them leading him to believe he that he was indeed finding the Love of God. But after six years of mistreatment, being coerced out of over $200,000, and emotional manipulation, Andrew found no real love, and certainly no miracles there.

When he believed that he had burned all his bridges, a loving message from his son helped Andrew to escape the cult and begin recovery. Tragically, he found his son dead on the floor a few years later. Andrew went through intense but highly effective mental health programs and emerged finally free of cultic mind control.

Ironically, he then experienced a miracle that brought him the love and happiness he hoped for.

This is a must-read first-hand account of a cult survivor who escaped a phony spiritual program, based on a movement that has drawn millions of practitioners into its grasp.

5つ星のうち5.0 A Compelling Story

This was a hard book to put down. Andrew LeCompte takes the reader right into his difficult onbringing, with its lack of emotional and spiritual guidance. He shows just how he was vulnerable to the teachings of A Course in Miracles and the cult and charisma of David Hoffmeister. One senses the spiritual vacuum in his life when he describes the Angel Walk. That gave me the chills. Instead of love and acceptance, Andrew found a community of toxic materialism overlaid with a veneer of Christianity and Spirituality. The seduction of feeling appreciated initially, and travelling to beautiful and exotic places must have been powerful. For those readers who have had experience of family members being drawn into cults, this tale offers good insight and understanding. Finding love is no easy task, neither is keeping it, but the search is what makes us human.

Thank you Andy for your strength and knowledge. Being a former member of the exact community Andy was in, and being there for 4 years, the exact time Andy was there, I can relate too everything he expressed in this book. I have been out of the community for about 6 years now and I am still struggling with the thought "what is wrong with me?" If you feel lost and in search of help just be carefull what you seek. After reading this book, I can feel a huge cloud of guilt and uncertainty lift from my mind, God bless you Andy for this.

5つ星のうち5.0 ‘A Course in Miracles’ misused

This book deserves to be read by all students of ‘A Course in Miracles’, as well as anyone concerned about avoiding cults. The author, Andrew LeCompte, bravely describes how he was hoodwinked into devoting his life’s work and his money to David Hoffmeister’s community.
David Hoffmeister claims to be a teacher of ‘A Course in Miracles’.
‘A Course in Miracles’ is a 1,200 page book from 1976, all about universal love, forgiveness and immortality. The Course became so badly misunderstood under the influence of that community that Andrew came to believe strangely that it was written by a bitter and angry woman, as he states towards the end of his book. Nothing could be further from the truth, as most students will know.
Andrew’s book has a happy ending, - he escaped from the cult, recovered from depression and found a loving relationship.

5つ星のうち4.0 When the beautiful ACIM book is used in nefarious ways

As a 30-year student and sometime teacher of Course in Miracles, it saddens me that it's beautiful messages can be so misunderstood, first by the author who was confused about the messages he perceived as coming from Holy Spirit, as in "guidance" to so many people to leave their marriages. And, then, if the stories about Hoffmeister are true, I'm even more deeply saddened that he has, in fact, cultivated a cult. I learned long ago not to put anyone on a pedestal, especially those who relish being elevated in that way. It seems Hoffmeister does indeed love the pedestal and doesn't shy away from those who want to put him there. Finally, Course in Miracles is designed to be a self-study process. There are many groups who charge nothing to study and learn from each other. Seek those. As for the book itself, it's not particularly well-written with editing errors; as well, the first few chapters are very tedious. I hope the author continues to experience the miracles of capital L Love that emanate from Sacredness.

5つ星のうち5.0 ACIM through Ego!

This is a very well written and sincere telling of the “negative” side of ACIM that so many believe should be hidden as “judgment” which allows ego to take over a discipline that was only meant to heal. Even Christianity had many sects veering from its teachings for disastrous outcomes. But there is a profound beauty in ACIM, also, if taught properly. Bravo to this author for sharing how very “off Course” it can get to help others be aware!! 💕
