レビュー
"This wonderful, clever little book is chock-full of hilarious explanations and corrections for all the most common grammatical errors—rules I am still fuzzy about after years of writing, and errors I see over and over in student writing, all over social media, and, shockingly, even in advertisements and professional print! Sean Williams can help you be a better writer!"—Charles Anthony Silvestri, Lyricist, composer, and author of A Silver Thread (GIA 2019)
"English Grammar: 100 Tragically Common Mistakes (and How to Correct Them) is a pithy compendium of grammar pet peeves that most English (and non-English) faculty members want to swat out of their students’ writing. Each of the 100 entries has a quick quip, an example of the grammar faux pas, a concise fix, and an occasional fun fact or need-to-know information. I plan to use this book as a vital part of training the college writing tutors I mentor and as a reference guide for my own writing needs."—Sandra Yannone, MFA, PhD, director of the Evergreen College Writing Center and author of Boats for Women (Salmon Poetry, 2019)

会話やくだけた書き言葉では、Oh, Someone left a cookie: I hope they don’t mind if I eat it./ Should each professor do their own grading? のようには“単数の” they普通であるが固い書き言葉ではどうなのではあろうか。”単数の” theyが確立するまでは、単数主語を複数にするより仕方がないだろうとの趣旨を述べている。Students should pick up their essays so they can correct them.
そして、文法的には正しいが不細工なhe or sheと、伝統的なheを間違いと断定している;
Every student should pick up his or her so he or she can correct it。
Every time I lecture, at least one person is always on his cellphone.
時代の移り変わりが分かって興味深い。全体としてあまり有用性はないが、一読するのも悪くはない。

Understanding the most common mistakes was my goal ...this book nailed it
Grammar, punctuation, word usage, and proper style all get sections and there are nice extra resources appended in the back of the book. Each of the 100 entries has a brief explanation, incorrect examples, an explanation of correct usage, and sometimes other trivia and further knowledge. This book is much more user friendly than most English textbooks I have encountered.
Throughout this easy-reading volume there is a great sense of humor, encouragement to learn more, and a few very mischievous turns of phrase helping us understand that this kindly author is our advocate to improve our writing. This is a great resource for students, writers, and almost anyone!
The author, also known as Captain Grammar Pants on FB, offers a small unassuming volume od conciise tips, easily organized, all with generous dashes of humor. What I appreciate is that she also kept the names of the issues... "nominative/objective/possessive pronouns" for instance... that tend to make one go unconscious. "Split Infinitives!" ACK.
Handy cheat sheets at the end are a great resource, and a few reads over the "50 Substitutions for Long-Winded Phrases" are well worth the price of the book. Suggest you start at the back and read over the Glossary to grok the language again. And DO LIKE the Captain Grammar Pants page on FB. Read over past posts.
And these days, under certain circumstances, it is fine to start a sentence with a conjunction. So there.
