【ストーリー】
[時間]が最大の敵。

臨場感120%の体験型映画の傑作
ワンカット風に撮られた映画。ついついカットの継ぎ目を探してしまう。精密に作り込まれた背景が素晴らしい。塹壕、荒地、地下、廃墟等、まるでその時、その場にいるかのように、主人公とともに映画を体験していく。今回、Blu-rayでの観賞だったが、映画館で観れば良かったと少し後悔。

サム・メンデス監督が祖父のアルフレッド・H・メンデス（第一次世界大戦時、キングス・ロイアル・ライフル第一大隊の上等兵だった）から耳にした体験談に着想を得て本作が誕生しています。ふたりの英国軍下士官のある1日を編集技術でワンカットの映像風に仕立てています。戦争映画なので過酷、悲惨であることはもちろんなのですが、ワンカット風に仕上げているためかやや軽い味付けに感じます。ともない、エンタメ性が向上しているように思えます。
助演がかなり豪華ですね。マーク・ストロング、リチャード・マッデン、ベネディクト・カンバーバッチ、コリン・ファースなどなど。彼らからすると当たり前なのでしょうが、英国軍の話だけに英国系の俳優ばかりです。こういうとこ好きです。
軍の体質や軍事行動の考証に関し批判の声もあるようですが、過去の出来事を知らしめること、物語として面白くするため幾分事実と異なる表現をとることは、ケースバイケースですが容認されても良いと思います。
面白くて、ためになりました。

If you're in the mood for a movie like Saving Private Ryan, Thin Red Line, It's a Beautiful Life, Schindler's List, or Letters from Iwo Jima, then this would be a good movie to watch. From the perspective of historical wartime accuracy (WWI) it is spot on. There are obviously some cinematic liberties, but if you're looking for a documentary, then I'd recommend something like Doomsday: World War 1 or Peter Jackson's They Shall Not Grow Old. If you're looking for an American Hero Saves the Day style of film, this is definitely not it.

This film is made of large segments (sometimes 30 or so minutes long) of moving masters - where there are no cuts. There are a few cuts along the way that are cleverly hidden. The sheer logistics behind the filming of this movie is mind-boggling to think about. The cinematography is what drives the movie, and there is limited dialogue. Honestly, there wouldn't have been a lot of talking in this setting anyway. Too much noise would be the end of a person in most cases. The grim reality of war in that period is expertly expressed.

It is a visual treat, and a must see for anyone who studies film and film-making. The acting is excellent, the makeup and wardrobe is similarly expertly handled. The limited writing and style is closer to what one expects from European film.

The reason I gave four instead of five stars is that a few sequences seemed to have been thrown in just because the writer(s) didn't know how to progress the story, a way of satisfying the Hollywood crowd rather than the story itself. And one person gives in far too easily. The film could easily have been twice the length (and it'd be even more worth watching).

Do make sure you're in the mood for a cerebral movie that shows rather than tells.

正直内容よりも撮り方の方が印象があり、この映画はノーカット風に撮っています。つまりカットがあると「あーそろそろ攻撃されるんだろうな」って分かる場面に対し、「いつ攻撃されるのか分からない」という緊迫感が伝わってきます。さながら自分も戦場にいる気分です。本当に戦争は良く無いと思います。

I don't know why people are giving it one star reviews, maybe they mistakenly thought they signed up for a Marvel superhero movie or something. This was a masterpiece, and the way it was filmed was so immersive and realistic, it almost feels like you went on this journey with the main characters. Most movies nowadays have so many cutaways and annoying, distracting edits that it is hard to really get into the movie. You may be entertained, but you know you are watching a movie, and most of the time if you can tell what is about to happen next.

This movie went the opposite way, it feels like it was shot all in one take, and you can't tell there was any cutting or editing until halfway through the movie when it switched from day to night time. With this approach, you get a taste of how WW1 played out in the trenches and the battlefields. You see the beauty and the ugliness all at once. You were dropped into the story with the two soldiers portrayed, a couple of kids given a message to deliver that could save thousands of lives. You see them make decisions based on instinct and morals, trying to follow orders and do the right thing in a world gone horribly wrong. There were actual runners just like them during WW1, and their jobs entailed doing exactly what was portrayed in the movie and more. The casualty rate amongst runners was extremely high, even higher than those that went over the top of the trenches into barbed wire and machine gun fire.

I know a lot of people go into a war movie expecting it to fit a certain genre or mold, but this movie really broke the mold. That makes some of those people uncomfortable with this movie, and as a result they dismiss it with terrible reviews without realizing their own hypocrisy of expecting a war movie to fit their comfortable world view of how things are supposed to play out in war. People don't always make rational choices in war, and film that successfully portrays the randomness and chaos of trying to deliver a simple message through battle lines, burnt out towns, trenches, and no mans lands should not be comfortable to watch.

And for those reviewers complaining about the encounter with the downed German biplane, it seems improbable but those types of encounters happened with some regularity during WW1 and the confrontations that occurred often had violent outcomes. Remember, in a war there is exponentially higher randomness and chaos than in peacetime, and things that would never happen today happened with regularity back on the battlefields during 1917. Just because a little over 100 years have passed and people have forgotten doesn't mean it didn't happen or won't happen again.

So if you are looking for special effects galore or some kind of wartime drama, or if you have the attention span of a five year old, this is not the movie for you. But if you are looking for a movie with a realistic portrayal of the western front during WW1, with one-take cinematography that you can lose yourself in for a couple of hours, this is the movie for you.

It was phenomenal. I cant say the single perspective camera technique is the first time I saw it, as I recall it from Birdman. But I haven't seen it in a war movie that I recall. It is chilling and horrifying, as you see the rats gnawing at the dead bodies rotting on the sides of the craters. The only reason it isn't the best ever is the plot is a bit too convenient "Deliver this message, save your brother" and I doubt generals all knew the names and locations of all their lance corporals. Also, the tactics were a bit lacking. I thought the whole hold the rifle at your hip to aim thing ended with Rambo.

The visuals were stunning, and the dialogue was excellent. It sounded like the exact type of conversations you hear from other men when you are in a unit, especially ones who have become used to death. You should see it, especially since there is nothing else to do since we are all locked down due to the coronavirus. .

I remember hearing people from other countries complaining about American war movies, saying things like "too much flag waving, jingoistic, blah blah blah" and in some cases that criticism may have been fair (Every John Wayne war movie ever made). My response would always be "ok then, make your own and I will go and watch". The response would be they don't have the budgets that Hollywood has. I must say, the Brits now have the budgets thanks to the massive profits from the excellent James Bond films put out and the great new Batman trilogy. With that budget you have a war movie with no overt patriotism, and a person from any country could relate to the dilemna of these men. Its a great thing to see, especially when Hollywood has lost all creativity and has decided to remake Ghostbusters, Road House, the new Star Wars movies, Total Recall, and the list goes on.

The story follows two Corporals, Blake and Schofield, who have orders to deliver a very important and time-sensitive message to a general planning an attack against the Germans. The message: to stop the attack. New aerial intelligence shows that the Germans are leading the British into a trap. The attack would result in the massacre of 1600 British soldiers, one of them Blake’s older brother. Blake and Schofield are ordered to leave immediately, and must cross the war-torn French countryside in a desperate attempt to save the lives of 1600 men. But the clock is ticking fast, and with German soldiers and death traps laying in wait, the odds of success — and survival — are against them.

Mendes did nothing short of an astounding job on this film. An intense story with absolutely brilliant cinematography and talented actors puts 1917 on par with other amazingly executed war films such as Dunkirk, Saving Private Ryan, and Hacksaw Ridge. Unique to its own story, however, is its real-time cinematography, with the whole film running in almost one continuous scene that’s broken only by a moment of unconsciousness. This technique only intensified the feelings that accompanied the movie, and I bounced on the edge of my seat in turmoil over every scene. Emotional, frustrating, intense, and inspirational, Mendes delivers a powerful story, reminding us in an age of Marvel superheroes that not all heroes wear capes.

History may be in the past, but it was real — very real — and real people suffered so that we could be free today. Never forget those that fought and died for us.

The single most important aspect of this movie was its ability for the viewer to follow the two soldiers in a narrow scope of view, while all around them the war raged on, with dead bodies, equipment, dead animals everywhere, even the land was dead. These two young soldiers, full of life, habituating to sudden death, surviving on hopes and dreams of returning home someday, were given a mission to deliver orders to stop a forthcoming British assault. One of the soldiers had a vested interest because his brother, a lieutenant, was going to lead his men into the approaching battle. I am not going to spoil the movie, but you have to see this movie, as it ranks up there with Paths of Glory starring Kirk Douglas. It drives your emotions and saddens you at the same time because these soldiers are so young, and death is literally everywhere, while duty calls and the military machine marches on, grinding young soldiers to mincemeat, wiping out entire generations of men who will never experience the love of a woman and the joy of having children. I highly recommend this movie and leave you with a poem from the WWI: In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The Larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie in Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow in Flanders fields.
