The fever pitch of an election year consigns most other government business to the bottom drawer. The media whips up this excitement further by attempting to make it a closely run two-horse race. The extreme language of Trump and the GOP keep firing up things even more.
America has a choice, which really matters. This might shock many who have become accustomed to having too many choices that don’t matter. Our lives come down to which stories we believe. Yuval Harari calls them fictions and some other folk name them myths that we live by. Individuals get so passionately caught up in these fictions that they are willing to kill for them.
America matters. The only way forward is the progressive path. You can never turn the clock back – only wrack and ruin lie that way. America is changing and has changed in its demographic makeup. Making political capital out of grievances over impressions about the past is a tried and true fascist technique. Totalitarian regimes are formed out of such misinformation and disinformation. Putin’s Russia is a prime example of this. The enemy is not those folk who do not share your predilection for the straight and narrow. What do you think would have happened if the January 6th insurrection was successful? Chaos, armed conflict, and eventually a police state, where strong arm tactics prevail. Authoritarianism soon degenerates into demagoguery, corruption, and the brutal suppression of freedoms.
In this collection of posts and short essays America is front and centre. America matters to the world. So many nations, have, looked to America for leadership on numerous issues facing them. Western democracies, in particular, have been inclined to look up to the US as some kind of big brother. The Republican party under Donald Trump has become an extremist anarchic force. The blatant and compulsive lying nature of Trump has infected the MAGA controlled GOP. Stupidity and lying are now so common place that Congress has become a cesspool for the worst aspects of the American character. It is hard to imagine school children looking up to these representatives in any meaningful way.
If you are looking for some clarity on the issues facing America, its people, and the world – the material here is laid out clearly and factually. It is a passionate time in the political sphere, as democracy is under very real threat from the rise of fascism under Trump and his coterie of right wing extremists. They thought that it could never happen in America. Most folk considered the love of freedom to be too strong. The culture wars, however, have poisoned the well, so to speak. All this phony BS about ‘wokeness’ merely hides an intolerance for other people and their rights to be who they are. Older white guys do not have a lock on respect and getting a ‘fair go’, as we say downunder.
