A Dream of Storms (In the Shadow of the Black Sun Book 1) (English Edition) Kindle版

The In the Shadow of the Black Sun Trilogy:

Book One: A Dream of Storms
Book Two: Shards of S'Darin
Book Three: Mournenhile

Twelve years ago, The Battle of the Black Sun had left Hagan scarred inside. The scent of blood and the incessant ring of steel were etched in his mind. Though his sword had turned the tide and saved the land, he had sworn off war and become a recluse, retiring to the hills above his hometown of Lauden and turning to drink. He had hoped to be forgotten. The world would not let him forget the oath that he had sworn in his youth, however, and an honorable Stone Troll named Gorin was sent to convince Hagan to honor it. Councilcrane, the ruling body of mages, had summoned him to the city of Harquinn and Hagan knew that the threat of war from across The Edge must have returned.

Gorin brought ill tidings. Autumn had never come to Elfwhere, but the leaves had begun to fall, foretelling the return of the dark lord Mournenhile, thought destroyed all those years ago. Like an ungodly pairing of bat and wolf, Mournenhile's army of Pith have swarmed into the Elven forest bent on their utter destruction.

Reluctantly, Hagan must once more step into the horrors of war and offer his blade to the cause. Joined by his inexperienced younger brother, D'Pharin and a small group of new companions (Vasparian, an Elf that served with Hagan under the Black Sun, Windenn, the Woodwarden and Shindire, the haughty Elf from across The Sleeping Sea) he sets off for the ancient city of Harquinn with a heavy heart.

What will the mages ask of him this time? Memories of atrocities committed in the name of Harquinn flood back into his mind.

Can he become the hero that he once was, redeeming himself and driving back the horrific creatures within the armies of Mournenhile?

Mr. Kenney is comparable to early Tolkien! I enjoyed this book, his characters are likeable and believable, the story is active and interesting. It kept me involved and was, unfortunately, over before I was ready for it to be. He has a real knack for character and story development. Very imaginative! I am eagerly awaiting the next installment in this series, I'll be keeping an eye on this author and starting a new collection. You can check out some of his artwork and other projects at [...]

William Kenney's first novel in the 'In the Shadow of the Black Sun' series never failed to impress. The story follows a 'retired' hero, Hagan, who is convinced to return to his former life at the request of Councilcrane, the rulers of Kirkaldin. He journeys to the city via a circuitous route, taking his brother D'Pharin and an old comrade Gorin (a Stone Troll, with him. On the way he discovers that an old foe has risen once more, and is threatening the Elven kingdoms.
Kenney's strength is two-fold. His world building is excellent. It is skillfully done, rarely intruding on the action, and filled with wonderful details: the Woodwardens; the mysterious Wisp; the decrepit city of Overbrook; the Talon; Elfwhere; the Inquitis, demonic creatures. It hangs together with a real depth, a sense of history that is vital for good fantasy to work.
The second strength is in the characterisation. The heroes are well written- the reluctant Hagan, embarressed by his past, the eager yet naive D'Pharin, the haughty Shindire, and the noble troll Gorin. They quibble, joke, love and bounce off one another in a continually intriguing way. And without great characters it really doesn't matter how rich the world-building is.
There is enough in this book to hook you into the series, enough loose ends to tug you into book two. Its tone is dark, but not as gritty as Abbercrombie or Martin. The action is realistic, but not excessive.
Anything I'd change? Occassionally the dialogue and narrative feels a bit stereotypical ('The warriors of Rathnok were as a wall.')and the POV can be a little jumpy, yet these are minor points in a stunning debut. I'd urge all fantasy fans to buy this, not least for the amazing cover!!

5つ星のうち4.0 An Excellent First Author!

This is Mr. Kenney's First book. As with all first author's there are definitely things that could have been improved, however it is a far better read than even many of these so-called proffesional provide in these books. I see many Tolkien elements in here however I wouldn't compare him to anyone in particular, his style and storytelling have a fairly unique feel.

PRO's: The characters are interesting, human, both heroic yet flawed at the same time. You can identify with what they are going through most of the time. The story isn't overly flowery, though he might throws in enough fantasy description to get the setting and feel right. The story moves at a well enough pace that people can follow along and he puts in enough description to know what is going on yet doesn't fill a page with description like I see other authors do. The story starts at a slow enough pace that you can get used to the world, and picks up near the end. His writing style improves throughout the entire book.

CON's: The first quarter of the book, his writing style can come off as a tad bland here and there, this improves later, however. The book is short for a fantasy novel, and this is a big no-no in my book (the biggest reason this is 4 stars, actually) and only comes in about half or less the size of most other books, yet is still well worth the buy.

It will be interesting to see this wonderfull new author grow, hopefully there will be many more books in this series and many other series besides.

EDIT: A few more PRO's: The story itself is excellent, as is the storytelling. It uses many familair ways of portraying races, places, and events but also adds in it's own flavor often enough to be interesting.

I normally read romance books, but I kept hearing rave reviews from friends, so I thought I'd check it out. I can honestly say that it surprised me, on how much I enjoyed reading it. The author pulls you in to this new fascinating world, from the very beginning. The great detailing, make it seem as if you know the characters, & are right there beside them, through their quest. I'm waiting with much anticipation for the release of the 2nd book, so I can continue on the journey with my favorite character, Gorin. Well worth the read, I thoroughly enjoyed it. For this being the author's 1st book, he did an excellent job! Keep up the great work!
