This was an enjoyable fantasy based on the story from the Bible of Saul and David. The characters are strong, resilient - good over evil carrying throughout the tale. The writer created a stirring story that carried the reader through her innate ability to form words that gripped and held on tight as they moved the story along expertly.
The liberties the author took to create this series only enhanced the story and made it more unforgettable. She enabled the reader to feel the angst of the characters as they dealt with adversity and somehow triumphed over death and evil that threatened them.
Destiny of Kings is destined to be a favorite among fantasy lovers everywhere. This story would make a wonderful beginning to a series of movies on the big screen that will resonate among fans of other famous fantasies. I look forward to the other books in this series.

Fantasy adventure of David

I thoroughly enjoyed this reimagining of the story of David from his life as a humble shepherd to his crowning as king. The blending of the familiar story with creative fantasy was interesting and intriguing. I'm looking forward to reading more of the series. The occasional typo and misspell, did not detract from my overall enjoyment.

Biblical story retold in a contemporary way.

Fiona Tarr has taken the familiar story of David and Goliath, but retold it in a contemporary fashion. I’m not overly knowledgeable on the Bible, but I think some characters are added for dramatic effect and to flesh out others, to give them more of a back story. I enjoyed this book very much as I’m not a huge fan of Christian fiction and this book is more about the character of David, the boy and the man he is becoming. Religion is there but is thankfully not too in your face. The character Jezebel is both sexy and menacing and we become to understand why her name is still used to describe a woman of loose morals. The book is well written and moves at a good pace throughout. This mix of adventure, fantasy and well drafted characters will appeal to a broad range of readers and I recommend it. Christian fiction fans might have a problem with the dark magic and the sexual promiscuous character of Jezebel, but I found it fitted with the story and enjoyed every last page. Looking forwards to the next book; Seed of Hope.

the book makes you think about how people often sacrifice their own happiness for others or for the greater good

I found that after the first couple of chapters I was really able to get lost in the imagery and characters in this book. In the end it was more than a 'coming of age' story about a boy, the book makes you think about how people often sacrifice their own happiness for others or for the greater good.
I particulary enjoyed Francesca and Martinez as characters and was intrigued by the seductive Jezebel. I stayed up late one night to finish this first book off and I am looking forward to the next one.

A biblical story that will be much easier for most to read

I found very little not to like about Destiny of Kings, to be honest. It expounds upon Biblical materials concerning David and Saul without really changing any of the story details. In effect, it’s essentially a dramatization of what you find in the Bible, which I think many people will have an easier time reading. It provides a lot of background and allows you to understand the characters much more deeply, rather than simply being a historical telling of events. In that way, I suppose it’s very much like historical fiction, a genre of which I’m generally a fan.
Granted, there were a few typos: things like “laugher” appearing in place of “laughter,” but these were few and far between. Other complaints are restricted to likewise small details. For instance, the author’s style of writing utilizes a lot of really long paragraphs, the use of apostrophes in place of quotation marks for dialogue, etc.; a character named Martinez, which seems strange since they’re ancient Israelites and I’m pretty sure that’s Spanish;. Maybe I’m completely spacing and Martinez is derived from Israel, but I don’t think so. Again, I could be completely wrong about this.
None of this really hurt the overall story, so it doesn’t have a huge affect on my rating. The litmus test for me is whether or not these things actually interfere with my enjoyment of the book, and thankfully that wasn’t the case. Honestly, my only reason for including them at all is more about leaving feedback for the author than warning off perspective readers.
In that respect, I would definitely recommend Destiny of Kings. It’s a quality read. I’ll definitely be looking into the sequels, since this is the first book in a series.
