I ordered the paperback version and am very disappointed that the book starts on page 9 ... I have to open the kindle sample every time i want to refer to the map, or read pages 1~8?! Really? This is a shame because I genuinely like the story...Please fix this for future page-turning addicts!

Mainly in the time of this story humans and dragons big or small are not allowed to interact with each other and punishment is imprisonment or death. A young dragon saves r fourteen year old girl who was severely hurt by blade and claws before being tossed out of a dragonship by the man who attacked the palace to destroy the royal family and make himself King. He put her back together in the months she recovered they taught each other to speak the others language. She is sent on a mission by a 2000 year old dragon to find out who her family really was as her parents that raised her had adopted her making her a princess. Unlike most princesses she was strong, tough, and didn't mind working hard. She got into warrior monks training including weapons and some almost long forgotten methods. She also forms a close friendship with a nineteen year old dragon. So the story tells about these three breaking all the rules helping each other for a year and a half. There are lots of adventures some that work just the way they plan but some don't. She is badly injured so many times but always fights back and most know that there is something special about her but not even the old dragon was able to figure it out. The false king fears her which seems to be the reason he keeps trying to kill her but she keeps killing his warriors in battle. But end the end she is alone and her memories of her dragon friends will be taken from her but why? You will be wanting to continue her adventures.

I can safely say, I absolutely HATE this author! How could he??? And this ending!!! ARGH!!!
I obviously have no other choice but to read every single thing he has published so far. So mean!!!

Okay, so now that I seem to have calmed down a bit, I can be a bit more coherent.
This world is absolutely amazing. Dragons, dragonships, dragonlore, magic, political machinations, colourful cultures... excellent worldbuilding. The characters... I have quite a lot of trouble finding books where I don't want to throttle the (especially) female protagonists. Every decision Lia makes is well thought out, she is intelligent and consistent. And she actually USES her head. The other characters she meets... hello there! I love them! They are just... ah, I can't find the right words... but I LOVE the characters!
And some storylines like... Ja'al. That was just... I actually fell off my chair laughing.
Anyway, in case it hasn't become clear, I absolutely adored this book. The characters are amazing, the storyline gripping, the world is fascinating beyond belief... I need to read the next part. Like... now.

I decided to tackle the Dragon Friend series after first falling in love with the Shapeshifter Dragons (Arania) series. One of the things I've come to appreciate after reading more of these books is how cleverly they intermingle and add context to each other.

Another fantastic chapter in the story of dragons in the Island World.

A hit-the-ground-running style introduction, great character building. An amazing story of self-discovery, stemming from (and rallying against) a dark and troubled upbringing. The ending has an emotional impact the likes of which I haven't experienced since reading "Where the Red Fern Grows" -- which is impressive for a cliffhanger that runs smoothly into the next book.
