SEED OF HOPE by Fiona Tarr is a literary masterpiece. Fiona’s writing style is excellent and this novel is a definite page-turner.
Fascinated by SEED OF HOPE, I did some research to find out the background for it. I wondered how much of the book is based on the Bible and how much is fiction. In an interview on Author Nicolette Andrews’ website on July 22, 2017, Fiona describes her writing: “I write fantasy with mystical/spiritual themes and rewrite Old Testament ‘history’ into epic fantasy adventures. I love ancient history and the turmoil of this era lends itself to fantastical re-imaginings.” Although this sounds like a difficult challenge, Fiona more than meets it. SEED OF HOPE reminds me of George R. R. Martin’s SONG OF ICE AND FIRE series. Certainly, Fiona’s portrait of Jezebel reveals a witch every bit as vivid and depraved as Martin’s Melisandre.
At the beginning of SEED OF HOPE, King David calls Martinez back to the Capital to serve as his General. Martinez recalls how the previous king, King Saul, had gone mad through his relationship with the Egyptian witch Jezebel.
King David has married Bathsheba and she’s pregnant with his child. When this pregnancy ends in miscarriage, David is rocked with guilt and fear that God took away this child to punish him for his sins.
As the story progresses, Martinez becomes more than a friend to Francesca, a Priestess on the King’s Council.
Fiona Tarr has a real talent for breathing life into the many characters in SEED OF HOPE. Kings, Queens, military men, priests and priestesses, rabbis, witches, and everyone else in this book play an integral part of the story. The search for the Ark of the Covenant, a major plotline in this novel, reads like a fascinating page-turner Fantasy novel. Religious figures, the evil witch Jezebel, and her equally evil and powerful father Jambres all struggle with powerful spells guarding the Ark, as King David and his military men seek to take the Ark back from Jezebel and Jambres. In SEED OF HOPE, many subplots are resolved when the situation with the Ark of the Covenant is resolved and this resolution is deeply satisfying.
I highly recommend SEED OF HOPE.

After studying Christian theology and gaining qualifications and experience in the social services sector, Fiona was drawn to re-writing the historical biblical stories of the old testament. Even better than the first book

I am steadily beginning to love this series. King David has triumphed over King Saul and is now a young ruler - just and loved, but not perfect. Though evolving around events set in biblical times, the story takes an imaginative spin that carries the epic feel of any good adventure. In this one, David and his group of trusted friends of different beliefs and origins set out to recover the Ark of the Covenant, but former opponents arise once more to hinder their success. The POVs are considered, there are some surprising turns of events, and the change fast, which suits the read and keep the pages turning. I really enjoy the varying personal stories that are explored and gradually introduced to weave a compelling read. It won't be long before I look for the next book in series.

Seeds planted for the next book! Bring it on!

This is the second in this series. It is very interesting reading with multiple events happening simultaneously and many characters and personalities. The author is developing characters' personalities further and is good at revealing how tension and conflict arises from misunderstandings, insecurities and jealousy in some of her characters. I found a significant portion of this story suspenseful and I love how I was left 'hanging' at the end. I eagerly look forward to reading how it all resolves in her next book.

Epic Middle Eastern Fantasy

This fantasy with deep roots in Biblical narrative (but a more modern-reading narrative and different telling) follows characters from ancient Israel, Egypt, and other locales of the ancient Middle East. I felt it brought a different kind of life to many people I have heard of in another context, and also a lot of emotional depth, showing us people's motivations with clearly understandable head hopping that didn't leave me confused.

Bringing history alive in a gripping manner

It took me a while to get into this and I did wonder if I should have read the first book. However, by about a third of the way in, I was starting to understand who the characters were and how they related. I found myself really disliking the ‘Prophet’
The detail of the book is impressive, capturing the period well. As a period not often covered, it was refreshing.
I would recommend reading book 1 in this series to get the most from this story, although you could read book 2 first as a self contained story also.
