4.4 5つ星のうち4.4 23,999個の評価

The first book in the million-copy, Wall Street Journal bestselling Kingfountain series from Jeff Wheeler.

King Severn Argentine’s fearsome reputation precedes him: usurper of the throne, killer of rightful heirs, ruthless punisher of traitors. Attempting to depose him, the Duke of Kiskaddon gambles…and loses. Now the duke must atone by handing over his young son, Owen, as the king’s hostage. And should his loyalty falter again, the boy will pay with his life.

Seeking allies and eluding Severn’s spies, Owen learns to survive in the court of Kingfountain. But when new evidence of his father’s betrayal threatens to seal his fate, Owen must win the vengeful king’s favor by proving his worth—through extraordinary means. And only one person can aid his desperate cause: a mysterious woman, dwelling in secrecy, who truly wields power over life, death, and destiny.

I love Jeff Wheeler books. They are fun to read. The characters are well written. I love that he writes books that don't have graphic sex or violence. There's still intrigue and implied violence you just don't have to deal with it in your face. My daughter could read this safely.

It had a slow start, but once it got good, I loved it. The first third or so was a little dry, but then it quickly picked up and became fascinating.

The world was interesting and unique, with its unusual water-obsessed religion and the subtle magic that's just barely outside of "natural", making it much more believable than most fantasies. The story was pretty nice too, with espionage, cunning plans, and the Queen's Poisoner (not someone who poisoned a queen, by the way) is a mastermind.

But the characters are what really made this story great. The author had a way of taking hatable characters and building them up to be loveable in a subtle, natural way. The Mortimer girl was annoying and obnoxious and I instantly wanted her to go away, but she became my favorite character by the end. Even the "villain", Severn, who was pained as a vile cruel monster had depth. By the end I wasn't sure if he was actually maybe a good, misunderstood person with a bad reputation.

It is so rare that a book moves me to tears, but it does happen occasionally. I sit there staring at the pages, or in this case my kindle, blinking them away, silently insisting to myself that I will not cry about a fictional story. And that's exactly what happened this morning.

I love this book. I know that's bad reviewer etiquette- to simply say you love it and walk away. But I did love it. I loved the characters, who were real and fleshed out and had their own personalities and strengths and weaknesses. I loved Owen, the eight year old boy who is both courageous and painfully shy. I loved Ankarette who was kind and loving and generous and clever to boot. I loved Elysabeth Victoria Mortimer who chatters non stop but deep down is a steadfast and loyal friend. And there were others who grew on me but I don't want to ruin anything for anyone who might be considering reading this.

The world building was wonderful. It is reminiscent of England. You'll see many names, like Yourk, which will remind you of their counterparts. To the people of the kingdom of Ceredigion though, a fountain, and a waterfall are sacred. The fountain can grant wishes if you wish upon it. The waterfall determines a man's guilt. The accused are given sanctuary at the fountain. The guilty die on this waterfall. Important people are "buried" this way. Some people, are fountain-blessed. To be fountain-blessed is to receive magical powers. They are rare and they receive different gifts, and it is said that their power will save them from the waterfall if they should go over. I would love to go into more gushing detail about the fountain-blessed but I don't want to spoil anything.

I was about halfway through the story before I realized how much of this book is based on The Cousins War. Ankarette is telling Owen the story of the old King Eredur. How he was brought into power by the Earl of Warrewik. How Warrewik rebelled against him when he did not get his way. How Eredur's wife is now in Sanctuary at Our Lady of the Fountain. How Eredur's sons, the two princes, have disappeared and are presumed dead but no one knows for sure. When I realized this, I started noticing many other similarities and was all the more impressed by the book. I love when history and fantasy collide. The author says in his note at the end, that this is, in a way, based on what might have happened if the Tudor's had never seized the throne from King Richard. And of course, if King Richard and other's had the powers of the fountain at hand.

The story telling here is subtle. The author shows you everything and tells you nothing. You start out feeling one way, or thinking one thing, and he expertly leads you to another conclusion entirely. I genuinely cared about most of these characters in the end. I already have loaned the second book from the kindle lending library, and hope it lives up to the expectations set here.

These books are frequently on sale for about $1.99 and can be borrowed from Kindle Owner's Lending Library or Kindle Unlimited. I mention this because I've had such bad luck with Kindle Unlimited books in the past year, and was put off by this. Don't let these things fool you- these are wonderful books! I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys fantasy or books about The Cousins War.

The Queen’s Poisoner tells the story of Owen, an eight-year-old who is thrust into the care of a king, and embroiled in politics at a terribly young age. Poor lamb. It is a classically written book, but it certainly stands up today, and the way Jeff transports us into the head of an eight-year-old is brilliant. This is a truly great book, and a fine example of a subtle story with a not so subtle impact.

This is the story of Owen, an eight-year-old duke’s son who is sent to live in Kingfountain as a ward to the king. But the king has a mighty reputation, and a sour dislike of Owen’s father on account of his father’s traitorous actions. Owen’s brother was killed in the king’s care, being thrown over the falls as is the way, so what chance does little Owen have? Well, fortunately Owen has friends in Kingfountain, and a power he is only just recognising. He will look to do more than just survive – he will look to thrive.

One of the very best things about this book is the age of the protagonist(s). Often young adult books focus on people who are coming of age, but Owen is not there yet. He is eight. But even though we see everything through his eyes, it is a really comfortable read. We are constantly aware of the youthful perspective, but never unsettled by it. And rightly, Owen’s best friend is of a similar age, with all the qualities of an eight-year-old. Refreshing.

This is also a really well thought out story, feeling rich and well balanced with the world in which it’s set. The execution of the plot is subtle, but it is no less for this fact – and in fact is probably more. Our perceptions are shifted through the novel, with enough action scattered throughout to keep the reading engaged. We are rooting for little Owen, and we want him to succeed. He deserves it, bless him.

There are also some really fabulous secondary characters here, too. Owen’s best friend, Elysa, is delightfully annoying (she speaks a lot), but we come to love her as Owen does. The King is odd, Master Berwick is a great parody, and Mancini is a hilarious fat man. But the greatest word has to be reserved for Ankarette, who is a really great character. Entirely unexpected, but she fits the role like a glove. Nice.

The other thing that I thought was really clever was Mancini’s ‘log’ – effectively a personal log of the wider goings on between chapters. This enabled the author to relay information to the reader without breaking the prose perspective – very clever. I haven’t seen that many (any?) places before, and it really works well.

This book has been written in a classic fantasy style, which is nice to see (no first person here). However, the slight downside of this is that it is a little more distancing as a read, and just takes a little longer to ease into. Not really a major problem, but worth a note.

And following on from that, it is something of a slow start to this book. With the slight distancing of the writing, and a singular perspective switch in the first chapter, this really needs a big punch to get it going. It doesn’t take too long to get going, but it’s not quite the first chapter, so make sure to read on. It really is worth it.

So, all in all, this is a really fabulous book – well conceived and executed with a nice plot and great characters. It also has a satisfying ending, though I’m not sure where it goes from here (tied up a bit too well?) That being said, I will still be reading on because it’s such a great read.
