I had to wait on writing this review until I finished reading the book twice!

This is the first in Tim Tigner's Kyle Achilles series. As in all of the author's books, he keeps the tension high and the action at a breathtaking pace. There is a global conspiracy with a (usually Russian) megalomaniac, and a scheme that you cannot fully appreciate until the book plays out. I found it interesting to read through each obstacle, even when reading the book for the second time.

In this story, Achilles is framed for the murder of his family and he must team up with his brother's fiancee in order to solve the mystery, catch the bad guys, avenge his family, clear his name, and save the free world. You would think the story would become trite or forced in order to do all of this, but the author pulls it off with brilliance (no pun intended). Along the way, you learn more about Kyle Achlles and what motivates him. Achilles is also a former CIA agent, an olympic biathlete, and an avid climber.

Achilles is in the mold of the latest round of action heroes. He is resourceful, fast-thinking, and deadly in combat. Many have compared him to Jack Reacher, but unlike Reacher, you get to see his vulnerabilities and watch him grow through his experiences. This book also shows the start of his relationship with Katya as they team together to solve the mystery.

For those who may be disappointed, there is a lot of romantic tension between Achilles and Katya in this book which is never addressed. Their relationship continues to grow through the succeeding books (at least the next two -- that is as far as I have read). But this is book is about the action, not the romance.

Well I must say this is the second Tim Tigner book I've read which has genuinely impressed me. Kyle Achilles, our hero here, joins with a beautiful Russian mathametician, Katya, to run to ground the producers and sellers of an extremely expensive new experimental black market drug called brillyanc which will add 20 points to the recipients IQ. Pretty nifty, eh. So - If you have a 140 IQ putting you at a 1 in 200 people intelligence level, imagine going up to 160 jumping you into the 1 in 20,000 category. Where was this when I was in school? Anyway, this is a brilliantly designed story that'll have you all over the world, intrigue to no end, and a completely logical deduction process buried in a bit of everything to whet your appitite. The exceptionally beautiful math whiz is just the icing on the cake. The fact that Kyles mother, father, and younger brother, Katya's fiance', are murdered with Kyle the fall guy, sure sets the tone of this imaginative yarn right from the getgo. And the story just gets better and better. An easy to follow thriller to get totally immersed in.

This is the 5th book by this author that I have read and I have given them all 4 or 5 stars (rare for me as I read
so many books). I read The Lies of Spies before this one (4 stars) and was keen to understand how the death of
Achilles's brother came about.

Achilles is in prison, accused of the murder of his family. He needs to escape so he can find the killers himself, as
the Police are not looking for anybody else. He and his brother's Russian fiancee team up and go on the run together.
Sometimes the pace was so fast that I had to stop reading to give my mind a chance to catch up! There was certainly
plenty of action and twists in the plot.

I liked the parts where Achilles free climbs high rise buildings - heart stopping! A recommended book by a recommended
author. I can see these books being made into films (unless they already are?).
