The Elusive Miss Ellison (Regency Brides: A Legacy of Grace Book 1) (English Edition) Kindle版
That's the firm opinion of not-so-meek minister's daughter Lavinia Ellison. So even though all the other villagers of St. Hampton Heath are swooning over the newly returned seventh Earl of Hawkesbury, she is not impressed. If a man won't take his responsibilities seriously and help those who are supposed to be able to depend on him, he deserves no respect from her. In Lavinia's pretty, gray eyes, Nicholas Stamford is just as arrogant and reckless as his brother--who stole the most important person in Livvie's world.
Nicholas is weighed down by his own guilt and responsibility, by the pain his careless brother caused, and by the legacy of war he's just left. This quick visit home to St. Hampton Heath will be just long enough to ease a small part of that burden. Asking him to bother with the lives of the villagers when there's already a bailiff on the job is simply too much to expect.
That is, until the hoydenish, intelligent, and very opinionated Miss Ellison challenges him to see past his pain and pride. With her angelic voice in his head, he may even be beginning to care. But his isn't the only heart that needs to change.
These two lonely hearts may each have something the other needs. But with society's opposition, ancestral obligations, and a shocking family secret, there may be too many obstacles in their way.
Fans of Georgette Heyer, Lori Wick, and Julie Klassen will enjoy the spirited exchanges between the bluestocking minister's daughter and the bruised war hero as they move past pride and presumption to a humbled appreciation of God's grace and the true strength of love.

レビュー
"The Elusive Miss Ellison is a wonderful blend of romance, witty banter, and Regency-era charm sure to delight readers."--Angela K. Couch, author of Mail-Order Revenge and The Scarlet Coat (10/31/2016 12:00:00 AM)
"The Elusive Miss Ellison will delight the hearts of Regency romance lovers with its poetic narrative, witty verbal swordplay, strict social constructs, and intriguing touch of mystery. Carolyn Miller is a bright new voice in the Regency genre, and I look forward to reading more of her charming stories."--Louise M. Gouge, award-winning author (10/31/2016 12:00:00 AM)
"Carolyn Miller gives the reader a sweetly satisfying tale and a charming Regency couple worthy of Georgette Heyer herself. I hope this is just the first of many."--Julianna Deering, author of the Drew Farthering Mysteries (10/31/2016 12:00:00 AM)
"Fans of historical romance will love Carolyn Miller's debut novel. Nicholas's journey from proud, self-centered man to caring and devoted suitor will capture the reader's heart as it did Lavinia's. With just the right touch of inspiration and interesting historical detail, Carolyn transports you back to Regency England."--Carrie Turansky, award-winning author of A Refuge at Highland Hall and Shine Like the Dawn (10/31/2016 12:00:00 AM)
"From the moment I cracked the pages I was transported to another era with a heroine as compelling as Lizzie Bennet and a Darcy-esque hero."--Lisa Richardson, author of The Peacock Throne (10/31/2016 12:00:00 AM)
"In The Elusive Miss Ellison, Carolyn Miller has created a heroine who will steal your heart and a hero who is as frustrating as he is charming. With unexpected twists and turns, the story stays true to the times. The scenes in the English countryside as well as in London will capture the imagination of those who love the Regency period and win over those who are experiencing the era for the first time."--Martha Rogers, author of the best-selling Christmas at Holly Hill and Christmas at Stoney Creek (10/31/2016 12:00:00 AM)
"Lovers of Jane Austen will be enchanted by Carolyn Miller's debut novel--especially readers who want to know more about the hero's journey to adoring their Regency heroine. This beautifully written book is definitely worth reading!"--Dawn Crandall, award-winning author of The Everstone Chronicles (10/31/2016 12:00:00 AM)
"With compelling characters and an engaging story, encapsulated by the romantic era of Regency England, Carolyn Miller's writing style is reminiscent of Jane Austen, with a modern sense of wit and spunk. Lavinia is a spirited heroine who will leave you smiling to the very last page, and despite the initial presumption of a disinterested, battle-scarred war hero, Nicholas quickly sneaks his way into your heart. This minister's daughter and guilt-laden earl are supported by an ensemble cast who keep you turning the pages. You'll be swept into a story of God's amazing grace and the slow unfolding of a love that overcomes even the greatest opposition."--Amber Stockton, author of more than twenty novels, including the best-selling Liberty's Promise (10/31/2016 12:00:00 AM) --このテキストは、paperback版に関連付けられています。
著者について
A longtime lover of Regency romance, Carolyn's novels have won a number of Romance Writers of American (RWA) and American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) contests as well as the Australian Omega Christian Writers Award. She is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers and Australasian Christian Writers. Her favourite authors are classics like Jane Austen (of course!), Georgette Heyer, and Agatha Christie, but she also enjoys contemporary authors like Susan May Warren and Becky Wade.
Her stories are fun and witty, yet also deal with real issues, such as dealing with forgiveness, the nature of really loving versus 'true love', and other challenges we all face at different times.
Her books include:
Regency Brides: A Legacy of Grace
The Elusive Miss Ellison
The Captivating Lady Charlotte
The Dishonorable Miss DeLancey
Regency Brides: A Promise of Hope
Winning Miss Winthrop
Miss Serena's Secret
The Making of Mrs. Hale
Regency Bride: Daughers of Aynsley
A Hero for Miss Hatherleigh
Underestimating Miss Cecilia
Misleading Miss Verity

From the back cover:
Pride, Presumption, and forgiveness...
Hampton Hall’s new owner has the villagers of St. Hampton Heath all aflutter—all except Lavinia Ellison. The reverend’s daughter cares for those who are poor and sick, and the seventh Earl of Hawkesbury definitely does not meet that criteria. His refusal to take his responsibilities seriously, or even darken the door of the church, leave her convinced he is as arrogant and reckless as his brother—his brother who stole the most important person in Lavinia’s world.
Nicholas Stamford is shadowed by guilt: his own, his brother’s, the legacy of war. A perfunctory visit to this dreary part of Gloucestershire wasn’t supposed to engage his heart, or his mind. Challenged by Miss Ellison’s fascinating blend of Bluestocking opinions, hoydenish behavior, and angelic singing voice, he finds the impossible becoming possible—he begins to care. But Lavinia’s aloof manner, society’s opposition and his ancestral obligations prove most frustrating, until scandal forces them to get along.
Can Lavinia and Nicholas look beyond painful pasts and present prejudice to see their future? And what happens when Lavinia learns a family secret that alters everything she’s ever known?
I started off thinking this was just going to be a spin off of pride and prejudice, but to my delighted surprise it was definitely a new story of its own! I think it started a bit slow in the beginning and towards the end there were some twists I did not see coming! (Which led me to stay up half the night to finish it haha)
I also started to think at one point while reading she would have to know that the guy was into her, it seemed so obvious. Then I started to realize I know all of his thoughts and hers in this book, if I was her I'd probably feel the exact same way! So I love that she captured the thoughts of each character spot on!
Loved: I loved that she was so independent, that she defied the class system back then, she had such a heart for the poor and that it was contagious. The resentment she held and slowly how God revealed she was not reflecting God doing so. I loved the character of Nicholas and all the different experiences in his life that led him to who he was. I feel like she really incorporated him as a person with war, growing up privileged, the guilt and seeing God.
Lacked: I think that after keeping family secrets for long for her to just say I think I want something different and they tell her everything seems a bit too easy after her whole life they guarded them so adamantly. I wish it would've been more of a change in her and after a long while of them realizing they couldn't make her happy there they finally tell her.
I feel like there's much more to uncover because it feels like there was so much more unsaid. I have a sneaky feeling this will show up in the next book! :)
Can't wait to read more! Thanks so much for letting me read!!
Disclaimer: I received this book in exchange for an honest review this in no way changes my opinions as stated above.

Miss Livinia Ellison the daughter of reverend Ellison loves the people in her small village of St. Hampton Heath. Her position as the reverends daughter allows her to care for her friends and to see first hand the neglect of the landed gentry of the area show to the poor crofters.
When Lord Nicholas Stamford the seventh earl of Hawkesbury returns to his estate Miss Ellison is determined to make his see his duty of care.
Lord Stamford already weighed down with guilt over past indiscretions and haunted by his time at war cannot abide the constant lectures and reminders of his duty from the forward young miss.
As the two clash against each other and start to see deeper undercurrents of their respective natures, hostility turns to grudging respect and then admiration.
But will Lord Stamford ever be able to put aside his societal and family obligations and marry someone who is not from a wealthy, titled family? And what happens when Lavinia discovers a family secret that will challenge everything she has been taught about society?
Caroline Miller’s debut novel is delightful, utterly swoon worthy and lots of fun. Fans of Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer will be enchanted.

Lavinia Ellison is a poor reverend’s daughter who lives with her father and aunt in Gloucester, England in 1813. There is much ado when the newest Earl of Hawksbury Hall returns to his country estate. Lavinia holds Hawksbury guilty of many sins, and she is the one young lady unaffected by Nicholas’s wealth and prestige. Somehow, this makes her very interesting to the earl.
I liked the quick wit that we see in Lavinia and Hawksbury. Sometimes I wanted to shake them into talking to each other more honestly. Miller seems to make the point that pride and prejudice can be a two-way street. Lavinia is certainly quite surprised to discover this shortcoming in herself, while she holds many faults against Nicholas.
“How often do we hold sins against others, whether they be petty, imagined slights, or even grave miscarriages of justice, while allowing our own weaknesses to slip through our fingers of blame?”
Miller’s prose holds a dry humor that often caused me to grin, even as I wondered how long Lavinia and the earl could treat each other so poorly. An unexpected twist totally changes the story in a way I had totally forgotten and didn’t see coming.
“A handsome appearance counted for naught unless matched by good character and actions.” So opines our heroine, yet the amount of changing required of Nicholas was tremendous. I often forgot this as I got impatient with the earl’s indecisiveness and inability to choose one straight course of action.
Quite a few tidbits of wisdom are included in the novel, many of them spiritual. One that rang especially true:
“All things are forgivable, when we realize how much we’ve been forgiven.”
The Elusive Miss Ellison is definitely a recommended read.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author and publisher through Celebrate Lit. I am voluntarily leaving this review. All opinions are my own.
