Resurrection Lily: The BRCA Gene, Hereditary Cancer & Lifesaving Whispers from the Grandmother I Never Knew: a Memoir (English Edition) Kindle版
Resurrection Lily shares a story of inheritance and intuition, of what can surface in the body and the spirit when linked by DNA. As Amy Byer Shainman discovers she has inherited a BRCA gene mutation that puts her at high risk of developing certain cancers, she struggles to come to terms with preventively removing her breasts when she does not have a breast cancer diagnosis. Through her experience making decisions about her health, Amy becomes invigorated with purpose and establishes herself as a leading advocate for those with BRCA and other hereditary cancer syndromes, tirelessly working to educate others facing the same daunting reality.
Painting a timely and moving portrait of what it feels like to carry a BRCA gene mutation, Resurrection Lily provides firsthand insight into the patient experience. Weaved throughout Amy's open and vulnerable story is the expertise of her doctors, education from top medical experts in cancer genetics, and whispered lifesaving guidance from her grandmother Lillian.

Put this book at the top of your list

I highly recommend Amy Byer Shainman’s memoir, Resurrection Lily. It’s candid, and sad, and funny, and engaging. But at its heart, it’s a call to action, steeped in science and brought to life by personal experience. In short: this very readable and lively memoir has the potential to save lives.
The history — the story — is intertwined with sound medical sources and punctuated with other forms of commutation: emails, texts, letters. But it’s not disjointed. There is a common thread between all the pieces: passion, empathy, determination, humanity. Even the scientific explanations take on a story of their own because the experts impart their knowledge with both heart and authority.
If you want to read a compelling narrative of courage and hope, read this book. If you want to learn more about the emerging field of genetic testing that will empower and educate you, read this book. Shainman seamlessly combines intuition with science, personal stories with solid research. Put this book at the top of your reading list; it’s worth it.

A Very Moving Read!

"Resurrection Lily" is a compelling account of the author's experience of coming to grips with the knowledge she carries a BRCA1 gene mutation. She shares her story with honesty, humor and vulnerability giving us glimpses into how she came to the "drastic" decision to undergo prophylactic surgeries to avoid a cancer diagnosis. Weaved into this personal story, the reader will also find sound, practical advice for coping with a similar situation and learn a ton about hereditary cancer. The voices of her sister, a dear friend and beloved grandmother are "heard" throughout as the author writes tenderly about each of them. A well-researched account of one woman's experience with an extremely difficult life challenge. A compelling, informative read for those wanting to learn more about the impact of hereditary cancer. Five Stars!

Amy provides a provocative, emotional story of her family's struggles with BRCA-1 positive breast and ovarian cancer. Her drive and gumption is repetitive throughout the book; and it is responsible for her discovery of this genetic mutation in her family lineage. I love how Amy is persistent and driven to find answers, and how she continues to this day to provide education to women and men about BRCA mutations; and, how best to provide medical and surgical decisions on real-life screening and prophylactic surgical options. This is a must-read book for both patients and physicians, and for anyone who has had a friend diagnosed with breast/ovarian cancer.

Amy Byer Shainman thoughtfully shares the story of learning her family's health crisis is actually connected to the past. She writes a deeply personal memoir of her sister's diagnosis of ovarian cancer and the subsequent discovery of a BRCA gene mutation in the family. Shainman had to make difficult choices about her health with this new information. She also teaches the reader about hereditary cancer and the critical information we all need to know for ourselves and our children. This book was moving and eye-opening. Shainman is an amazing writer. I highly recommend this book!
