The Echo Wife: A dark, fast-paced unsettling domestic thriller (English Edition) Kindle版
A dark and suspenseful novel of lies, betrayal, and identity - perfect for fans of Big Little Lies and Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror.
It was meant to be an evening to honour and celebrate Evelyn Caldwell's award-winning, career-making scientific research - but Evelyn has things on her mind.
Things like Nathan, her husband, who has left her for a younger, better, newer woman. A woman who is now pregnant - but shouldn't be - and is strikingly familiar. Too familiar to be a coincidence.
A woman who shouldn't exist.
The Echo Wife is a propulsive new novel from an international rising star about identity, murder, and the choices society forces women to make.

Evelyn is a successful scientist and pioneer of a specialized technology in human cloning.
However, her life takes a turn for the worse when her already rocky marriage is dismantled completely when she finds her husband cheating on her. To rub salt in the wound, he is doing it with a clone that he developed using her technology to create a better version of her.
Now her good-for-nothing husband is dead, killed by the same clone leaving Evelyn to deal with his mess and his clone behind.
My Take
The plot had a lot of potential but the writing was flat and felt a little robotic to me in a few places. I couldn’t connect with some of the emotions that the book called for.
Evelyn as a protagonist wasn’t too relatable or maybe she was created that way, I couldn't tell. She was angry a lot and rightly so, after all her husband had left her for a better version of her that he created using her technology, but her character was also pretty unlikeable. Sometimes you just liked the clone better and realized where the husband was coming from and then felt guilty because he is supposed to be the bad guy.
After a point of time, the plot or rather the descriptions felt repetitive like below:
“It was the first time I could recall hearing her sound anything but placid.”
“It was the first time I'd heard her express doubt, and she’d done it so immediately, so openly.”
Or
“Anger, hot and biting, flooded the back of my throat like a bolus of morphine”
“The anger in the throat coiled tighter, tighter, tighter.”
“I felt a strange, sick kind of anger.”
I would have loved it if the book had gone in the direction of or even a bit more into the depth of the ethics of cloning and the rights and autonomy of a clone. While the book does delve a little into the concept of agency and rights, it is more surface-level.
With the suspense created throughout the book, the ending felt a bit short and anticlimactic but still a satisfactory one.
I would give the book 3 stars, for the unexpected but welcome twists it kept throwing to keep the story engaging and as a good starting point for anyone looking to get started with science fiction for its simple yet effective language and easy-to-follow storyline.

Its a well crafted, tight SF thriller that makes you worry where we could be going with some of the possibilities biotech might bring us. I thought of it as feminist at one point but I'm not sure it is. The protagonist comes out of things as morally bereft as the antihero.
A good book. I would read the author again.

<b>SUMMARY</b>
Evelyn is a award winning scientist who has created a technique for cloning humans. These clones are used as tools, mostly for experimental purposes in a laboratory setting, not to live among people and mix into society.
Career wise, Evelyn is at the top her game. She is highly respected, maybe even revered. But, her personal life is another story, it say it's in shambles is an understatement. He husband (also a scientist, but not of her caliber), not only left her for another woman, but he left her for a clone he secretly created of her! Only a "better" version of her. She's stuck because she cannot report him or tell anyone because it would ruin her reputation as a scientist and as a person. It all leaves her feeling very alone and isolated. And, she's not exactly a warm and fuzzy person anyway so she doesn't have many close friends to begin with. Her husband, Nathan, was really her best friend so now she is feeling beyond betrayed.
Evelyn has not exactly had an easy time in life. In addition to her recent troubles with her husband, her childhood was <i>troubled</i>. The book slowly introduces the reader to the undertone of a darkness or a danger in her childhood home. We don't learn the full extent of it until the very end but it explains why she was a guarded person.
Not long after Evelyn learns of Nathan's new <i>fiance</I>, Martine, she receives a call from Martine begging for her help and that's when things began to get complicated.
This book explores a lot of issues including abuse and sticky moral questions.
<b>WHAT I LOVED</b>
In general this is a well written, thought provoking novel with a unique premise and interesting characters.
The whole concept of clones creates a unique plot for this story. It creates its own set of moral issues and dilemmas. It was quite interesting and made me think about what constitutes a life.
I like that our heroine, Evelyn, is kind of prickly and cold. She is not a sweet wounded little woman we would typically see in this kind of story. I generally found her relatable but the way she ran through her assistants made me realize must be a nightmare to work with and the way she dealt with the clones she created brought up so many questions.
The plot itself had well thought out twists.
<b>WHAT I DIDN'T LOVE</b>
There were a few loose ends that were never tied up. I don't want to go into detail and ruin the plot but there are a couple of small details that would be huge issues.
I found it hard to believe that a woman as smart as Evelyn would have neglected to notice several potential issues. There were times when she overlooked something that was glaringly obvious and it caused problems foe her. I know she could be a bit of an <i>absent minded professor</i> but she was always complaining that Nathan was sloppy but she made some ill thought out decisions herself.
<b>OVERALL</b>
This book has a unique plot concept which leads to some deep questions. It turned out to be much more than just a thriller. Note: there are some triggers such as abuse, grooming and it can be pretty dark at times.
