Darwin Daze (English Edition) Kindle版
A 26 year old graduating student from The Royal College of Art, London, goes on the journey of a lifetime to take up the position of lecturer in drawing and painting at The Darwin Community College, Northern Territory, Australia.
The year is 1976 and the young, enthusiastic, but naive young man travels from Chelsea (a suburb in London) to Casuarina (a suburb of Darwin), Nothing could prepare the young adventurer for what would lay ahead.
The memoirs are accompanied by 25 photographs, paintings and oil pastel works, many in full colour. In addition, Bernard has produced 23 pen and ink drawings specifically for this book.

Dazed and awakened in the end

It's a great tale. Just overlook the author's idiosyncratic grammar and sentence structure. People who have been to Darwin and/or know of Ollis's artistic career, this is a must and you will rate it a 5. Others may be (fairly enough) put off by an uncomfortable sense that he regarded the Indigenous people and Territorians as creatures in some strange new zoo. In that, it's a book of those times. The ending describes how the Australian light and colours changed him such that he couldn't go back. The book has a number of Ollis's contemporaneous sketches and paintings, some in colour.

A very amusing Brit's introduction to a different world, that was Darwin in the 1970's.

Just loved it, the amusing incidents reminded me of similar but not quite so dramatic memories of things that happened to us in Sydney in the early 70's. Our English friends enjoyed living in Darwin until cyclone Tracey hit in 1974 and they will also really relate to the humour in this book.
When we came as Ten Pound Poms in 1971, we missed the plane when it had a short stop in Darwin coming from London, on the way to Sydney. The pilot very kindly came back for us ! (the plane had reached the end of the run-way). So that was our introduction to Darwin and to Australia !
