Meadow's Writing Has Only Gotten Better Since Incarnate!

Nightrender took a few chapters to really take off (flight pun intended), but once it found its footing it was a delightful read. The characters are rich in personality, the story is rife with intrigue and fun banter, and the villain is refreshingly morally grey. I was thrilled to discover that Jodi Meadows was behind this novel, as I have a lot of nostalgia around Incarnate. While (like the old Cassandra Clare books) I doubt Incarnate would hold up now, I'm happy to report that Meadows has grown tremendously as an author and I can recommend Nightrender with few reservations. The author even managed to make me root for a romance starring one of my least favorite tropes: while 'soul mates' is normally the bane of my existence, the concept of a Soul Shard was fascinating enough to keep me invested. I highly, highly recommend this book for anyone jonesing for a great YA read.

I quite enjoyed this story - it’s cute and interesting, but it does move a bit slowly. A slightly snappier pacing would have made this book hard to put down. By the end of the book I was firmly on Team Villian, and I’m rooting for him to win in book 2.

This was excellent. It pulls you in from page one and just keeps you with it to the end. The characters have diverse personalities, so with multiple POVs, there’s someone for everyone. No one is given character traits that their actions don’t support. It’s lovely to read characters who are what they’re supposed to be. And, the main POVs aren’t all run of the mill. It was quite refreshing.

The plot is good, and it’s fast-paced. I couldn’t believe I’d read the whole book so quickly with all of my other commitments these past few days, but I just wanted to know what was coming next. There are alliances, betrayals, intrigues, conflicts, ancient magics, potential world annihilation, and a hint of sexual tension. What more could anyone want?

If you’re looking for a fun, fast-paced YA fantasy that’s a bit different from anything you’ve read, this is your book.

Prince Rune is betrothed to Princess Hanne and as they’re visiting his homeland, she gets trapped in a malsite where no one can see or hear her on the outside of the boundary of this area filled with malice. Rune wakes the Nightrender from her 400-year old slumber to save the princess. The Nightrender is a mythical hero who saves humans from malice and corruption. Rune wants to help the Night Render but his parents fight him about it, so nothing gets accomplished. Meanwhile, Hanne is threatened by an evil creature, a rancor. She must help create a weapon against her kingdom and Rune’s kingdom or she will be destroyed. Hanne wants to save herself and she’ll do anything to stay safe.

Likes/dislikes: The story is of action and intrigue. The Night Render is an awesome mythical character with a single mission. The character development is a little stilted in some parts.
Mature Content: PG for implied sex.
Language: PG for 1 swear and no f-words.
Violence: PG-13 for bloody death.
Ethnicity: The ethnicity is light brown skin dominant in Ivasland and white skin dominant in Embria.
