A child of New Spain, Martina Castro became a leading figure in the tiny pueblo of Branciforte during California’s two decades as a Mexican colony. But her wealth, fame and influence quickly turned to destitution, infamy and irrelevance once California became a U.S. territory in 1848. By the time of her death, her three husbands were long dead and all eight of her surviving children had turned against her in a protracted struggle over her land, title, and legacy. Close relatives such as Rafael Castro and Thomas Fallon exploited her naivete for profit, while opportunists such as Frederick A. Hihn and Louis Depeaux took advantage of her hospitality. Even backcountry settlers like Mountain Charlie McKiernan, Brad Morrell and Lyman Burrell were swept into the battles over Martina’s massive land grants: Rancho Soquel and its ill-defined Augmentation. Hers was a struggle over the rights of a Californio in annexed territory, of Mexican law in an American legal system, of the status of a woman in a man’s world. This is the story of Martina Castro and how her tribulations shaped the course of history in Santa Cruz County.

Excellent work. I’m a 4th great grandson of Martina Castro. This book informs readers of what Martina must have gone through after her first husband drowned, second husband was murdered and third husband sold her out and beat her. Also explains how difficult life became for an illiterate Mexican woman who didn’t speak English, after her previous Mexican land became California and the sharks smelled blood in the water in the form of her land holdings. The book really explores the convoluted and sometimes probably illegal land deals that shaped a large part of Santa Cruz County. Quite a coincidence that Frederick Hihn gets a job at the Santa Cruz County Recorders office, with access to ALL the county land deeds, and SURPRISE, becomes one of the largest land owners in the county through multiple lawsuits against deed holders. Santa Cruz County had its very own version of Mr Potter from “It’s a Wonderful Life”! The book even sheds some negative light on my own distant relatives. Great book. Don’t get bogged down in the deed and lawsuit details. Lots to digest here.

This is an engaging read about an important and influential woman from the central coast region of California. It has been meticulously researched and the writing and format make it easy to follow, especially considering all the factual twists and turns. I understand there are 2 other volumes in the works and am looking forward to digging into those, as well.

An unbelievable amount of research went into this book. Much of it comes from original letters, diaries and documents. It makes for a very readable narrative but with many details that were never previously known. If you have any interest in the early days of California and Santa Cruz County, you will want this book.
